Exploding Mooring Hitch Knot - How To Tie One

Knot tying video tutorial. Learn how to make a mooring hitch knot. Easy step by step instructions for tying a mooring hitch knot in this simple guide.

The mooring hitch is a quick release knot that despite its name is not suitable for mooring. It holds a major security flaw. Like all quick release knots unintended interference with the free end can trigger the knot to untie. Then it is good bye boat.

Uses:
Can be used for light loads where a temporary attachment is required such as tying off a kayak whilst getting in or out or temporarily tethering off an animal.

Advantages:
Quick to tie and untie

Disadvantages:
It's lack of security makes it inappropriate for mooring. Tends to jam under heavy loads so that the slipped trigger will not easily pull out.

As alluded to in the caveat at the end of the video, this is not a hitch you should rely on. It can invert under load as the final loop collapses into the preceding loop and pops out. Low-friction ropes like braid-on-braid are particularly prone. The round-turn-and-two-half-hitches, though less convenient, is much more secure.

What's the best way to tie two sticks together, but not at 90 degrees but 45 degrees? Is the square lash the best or something else?

I like the highwayman's hitch better. It's very similar, but the highwayman's hitch comes straight away from the pole it's tied to, where this one feeds back around the pole. It sounds insignificant, but if your other hand is occupied with calming a horse or whatever, it's good to be able to grasp the end of the rope with one hand, undo the knot and lead the horse away without needing to let go or feed the line around anything.

That looks like a Highwayman's hitch to me and yes, I like it more than the slipped clovehitch. Faster to tie and faster to untie and they have some of the same characteristics.
I use it all the time to tie fenders to my boat wich might be changed from one side to another in a hurry...

I'm searching for knot but I can't find it anywhere. I'd like to make an auto locking knot to join 2 ropes, for example, tying a shoelace so I can make it tight and when I release it, it keeps tight

"The mooring hitch can slide along the standing part (A-B); a pull on the other parts (C, D) can lock it into place, forming a fixed loop also known as the Lapp knot." - Eng Wiki

really useful for skittish horses who don't want to be tethered so you can yank it free if they start to panic

If you finish this knot the way shown in this video it will fold and jam under load. It will be hard to release. If you dress it appropriately it won’t jam and will still release.

Put some pressure on the standing end and that knot will spill over.
