This is a knot I have used almost every day at work. It's great because it doesn't slip and either end can be used as the lifting point. Also it can easily be adjusted. If you are in a hurry and need to place it on the end of say a pipe, you can just make 2 loops side by side in your hand then cross them and slide it over the pipe.

Sweet! I always wondered what people meant by the clove hitch. Its so simple: Throw it over and come up to the left of the rope than over again coming up through above the crossing point then tighten.

Man, reading through the comments and seeing how many people are just now learning basic knots.
