Quick Release Exploding Clove Hitch Knot - WhyKnot

Given how easy this knot is, it’s amazing that it had not been invented earlier. However it is a relatively recent innovation. First published in a yachting magazine in 1999. It is quick to tie and even quicker to untie. It is tied by throwing your rope around an object and inserting a drawloop through a clove hitch tied on a bight (tied midline or in the middle without access to the ropes end).

Uses:
Would make a good knot for camping tied around a tree for a quick release clothesline or ridgeline. Anywhere a quick temporary tie off is needed.

Advantages: The ease of tying and untying

Disadvantages: Like all knots tied with a drawloop, security is an issue. Not to be used for critical purposes, like climbing.

I discovered this one myself a few weeks ago, by first tucking the tail loop through a single twist in the main line, didn't hold up in the wind so I thought to double up the twists, a clove hitch. Works well on the poly ropes, so slippery.

A note of caution. This knot will also explode by pulling the other end of the bite; that is, the end going around the pole. to avoid this just pass a second bite through the loop of the first and pull tight.

In my experience with this not if it was undertension with soft rope. Its is no longer a quick release knot
