There are 2 states of every developer in IT:
1. I feel like a god
2. I feel like a complete and utter moron.

During my 23 years of IT, the most important thing I learned, was "how to learn". I also realized along the way that I will never learn everything in IT. My goal became to learn the things I enjoy and use those skills to make a difference, not just earn a paycheck.

It's the Dunning-Kruger effect -- incompetent people are usually unaware of their incompetence because that level of self-awareness requires the very knowledge they lack. The thing that has gotten me over some huge, intellectually complex mountains is trying things that I know from the outset are way over my head, failing, trying again, failing again, getting pissed of and wallowing in self-pity, trying again, and yes.. thinking that I'm too stupid to understand... but then trying agin... until eventually things start to click, and when they do, I wonder why it wasn't obvious to me all along. That's my process.

My biggest flaw happens to be lack of ambition.
You could call it lazyness, well it kinda is. I want to gain knowledge and yet most of the times I can't get to make myself useful and try out things.
On good times I can get myself motivated and am learning new things. Although I do feel stupid for not having that most of the times.

Great video by the way, it did get me thinking!

OMG this is so true. Ive done so much in the last 30+ years in my IT career. I quit school in the 9th grade, harassed Dell as a teenager to get my food in the door, "successfully i might add as a parts sales rep" and now I am a very broad generalist in a C position, my fingers in multiple companies, including my own business. And sometimes I really panic like, how the hell did i get here. I dont know anything about wireless DFS Frequencies. im sorry Curl what? lol. when I realize how much i dont know, i freak out. but then I have some coffee, have a chat with google, watch some ITProTV and patch that ? up and move on. Epic video Chuck.

You hit the nail on the head Chuck. I get comments on my YouTube videos all the time for software or topics in general that I've never used or don't fit one of my use cases.

There is a Ghandi quote that I remind myself of a lot and it helps keep me going "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever."

Keep doing what you're doing! I appreciate your videos and definitely get value from them.

This video popped up at just the right time for me. I’m taking online classes for IT. Currently in Network +. It’s rough going and I had a “I feel stupid “ moment today. I seriously considered quitting, then I saw this video. I just wanted to say thanks for putting this video out. Keep doing what you are doing and I’ll keep on watching!!

I wasn't sure you would be a subscription I would enjoy as I stumbled upon your feed here by accident. Been in IT for 30 years now and I am only learning more every day than ever now. You have to have this attitude or you wont last long. Keep learning! It can get you everywhere.

Awesome video, I really needed this because I was feeling stupid last night. Luckily I subscribed because I got the notification that you had posted this video. Whenever I'm feeling down or stupid the best way, in a way you said this, to get out of that feeling is just doing it... I'll jump right into work not wanting to do it to the point if I do enough I'm like a non-stop train of learning. I'll want to keep learning until I fall asleep. Whenever I procrastinate I just tell myself, "f**k it just do it!!"

Thanks Chuck, what you said in this video resonates with me. I've been in IT for about 17 years now, I am currently the lead of our Wintel group. I've worked under others that thought they knew everything (They never seemed to feel stupid), well everything they knew aged and they let themselves get behind. I learned from that and always embrace that inadequate feeling, and I convey that to my team. I think they respect me more because I don't look as though I'm above them (Which of course I'm not), instead we are all on the same level. It also seems to have helped them because they embrace that feeling too and are always looking for more self improvement, and improving the team as a whole. I always tell them, and my kids, "You're not going to always be right, you're not always going to have the answers, and that's ok. Just be as right as you can."
