How Vampire Bats Suck Blood for 30 Minutes Unnoticed

Thanks to a local anesthetic in their spit, vampire bats are able to drink blood from their prey without being detected. That way, they can feed undisturbed for up to a half hour at a time.

I also hear vampire bat colonies are known to share blood meals with bats that weren't as lucky to get a meal, but there's also a system in place where if an individual bat tries to "cheat" by never reciprocating if another bat needs a meal, they no longer will obtain blood meals from other bats. I also recall reading that interestingly, vampire bats are relatively uninterested in human blood, and typically prefer the blood of ungulates such as horses, donkeys, etc.
