A Giant Prehistoric Vampire Bat - Desmodus draculae

Показать описание
The largest vampire bat known to have existed, Desmodus draculae, lived throughout the Americas and may have fed on megafauna such as giant ground sloths. There's also a possibility that it might not be quite as extinct as we'd thought...

“A monster among microbats.” That’s like being an absolutely enormous teacup poodle.

Wait, are you telling me that a giant ground sloth took a dump on a bat and the bat died from the sheer mass of the dump crushing it?

One being found on the underside of a giant sloth's coprolite makes me wonder if it was feeding on an unwise area of the sloth's body at an inconvenient time, and died an ignoble death trapped under a pile of excrement.

Can you do a video on Necromantis? It's a giant carnivorous bat with massive teeth. Weighing 47 grams with a meter long wingspan, it was large enough to hunt birds and rats. It also might have been a scavenger, hence the name.

Edit: Yes, I'm aware the Spectral Bat is far larger, but for the Quercy Formation in France, it was a giant. Plus, Necromantis still had a more robust jaw and wider teeth than the Spectral. I still think that's enough to call it monster amoung bats, despite the small size.

The amount of super predators and giants we "just" missed is higher than one might think....

This video is very good, but there are two mistakes. The use of “microbat” is outdated. Microchiroptera is now known to be a paraphyletic grouping. Megachiroptera and Microchiroptera have been replaced with been Yinpterochiroptera and Yangochiroptera. Also, the most recent D. draculae remains are dated to 3, 000 ybp, not 300 ybp.
Besides that though, again, this is a very good and nice to see a relatively obscure taxa like this get some love. I’d love to see a video on some other bizarre extinct bats like Synemporion, Aegyptonycteris and “Hipposideros” besaoka

The Desmodus draculae being significantly larger than the Common Vampire Bat it would be quite possible that it had higher tolerance to cold than the smaller bat.

Wow, an actual plausible cryptid. It would be unbelievably wonderful if a few living specimens were found!

Yes please include more bat content! They’re such an under appreciated mammal species.

The fact that this animal could still be alive is seriously cool on it's own
