As a teen, I fell in love with all bats after seeing vampire bats at the Sonora Desert Museum outside Tucson…wonderful place. The animals are kept in large enclosures and the whole place is gorgeous.

Actually, vampire bats are a separate family (Desmodontidae) from new world leaf-nosed bats (family Phyllostomidae), vampire bats are more closely related to bulldog bats (family Noctilionidae).

Interesting about the saliva having medicinal properties. In the film Nightwing, David Warner's character calls vampire bats a scourge, offering no benefits to the ecosystem, and actively hunts colonies to exterminate them. They're depicted as causing a terrible, life-threatening Bacillus-based illness to both the cattle and human population due to their blood-seeking predation.

It's actually a pretty cool film with a haunting and thematic score if you can get past the premise of vampire bats being the literal monsters of the movie.
