Hi, thank you for the explanation on long vowels, especially for えい. I understand that for せんせい and とけい, it's just the え sound for longer. But what about when a word ends with -ていました for example. Or べんきょうしています。When I hear people say it, I hear the て and then い sound, not just the て sound for longer.

So I understand that えい forms a long e sound like ええ. But sometimes, I hear people say words like 奇麗 or 零 and they pronounce the えい combination like the letter A in English, instead of making it a long ええ. Are they just saying it incorrectly? Should it be an extended ええ or pronounced like えい (English A)? Thanks for any help!

One slight criticism, however: when Romanizing with macrons your i with dot *and* macron looks very odd! It should be
lower-case short *i* (with dot); upper case *I*
lower-case long *ī* (with macron but no dot); upper case *Ī*
