Katakana is also used to write onomatopoeia like ニャ(nya, "meow") or ワンワン( wan wan, "woof woof").

Hiragana and Katakana are easy to write, but I could say this also to Kanji for some few strokes.

It's actually helpful to use different symbols for native or foreign words. 👀

I'm about four years into studying Japanese. I recently started teaching my wife how to read Katakana and Hiragana. At first she couldn't understand what I meant by hiragana is more rounded and katakana is more square, but after a few days of cram and practice she finally sees the difference. I'm so happy

The bit about the "rounded" stuff for hiragana provides a whole lot more clarity for me. Ive been searching for THAT answer for ages.

Katakana is also used for animal names. That’s why Kaiju names are written in katakana.

What’s confusing is why have 2 different ways for the same sounds……

Thought these were rules until I played a game in Japanese that used katakana for particles and endings for some characters just to make it read like the person had an accent.

Oh so thats why i like katakana more.. it's only natural
I am currently learning pronounciation but idk what to learn next after mixtures of 2 such as ちや=Cha or the ° and ``

So why is the word for snake, ヘビ, usually written in katakana though? I didn't think it was a loan word, is it just an exception?

Katakana and Kanji were the only scripts that were used in official documents before WW2... It looks a bit intimidating tbh
