Today we are sharing 3 drills you can practice to help you learn the jibe. There are a few important skills that will allow you to progress your wing foiling safely, pitch control at various speed, angle and edging is a major one.
Those 3 drills will lead to completing your first jibe on foil, let's get to work!

Doing 2 or 3 relatively easy things at once becomes hard. Gwen separates his jibe lesson from all the rest I've seen by separating the parts of the jibe so well. He breaks the code for those of us who are struggling. He even tells you when you failed a critical step and to start over! He also asked us to mention our breakthrough tip, which for me was not stalling coming out toeside by chest forward and letting out the wing to power up at approx. 12:00. This really is a classic for which I"m sure many will be very grateful. I only wish you'd done this many sketchy falls ago!

Yes! Great video as always.

As I learned to jibe, I found these tips especially helpful:
1. Maintaining good speed is crucial, and having more wind makes everything easier.
2. Practicing the movements and hand changes on land really boosted my confidence on the water.
3. Most importantly, moving my back foot forward before starting the jibe completely changed the game for me—it prevented stalling and made every turn feel more controlled and fluid.

Working with a trainer also made a big difference. My trainer encouraged me to commit to the turn every time I had the right speed, and in just an hour or two, I progressed more than in several solo sessions. I also learned that the more time I spent on the water, the better my results.

Thank you very much. I love your videos. I feel like I can wing foil already and I’ve never been on one.

Great video, thank you. I think the key take away for me is related to the wing handling, and really doing less with the wing rather than more. I like how you describe that the wing will eventually be there for you to pick up when you’re fully through the turn, rather than reaching for it too early, in the downwind part of the gybe. Very good info. I’ll try to practice these drills over the next few sessions and we’ll see what happens. Thanks again

Great video!
The top 3 things I notice when teaching people how to gybe are the following:
1. As you mentioned in this video, they need to trust the glide. Just let them glide without the power of the wing to make them realise they do not need the constant power of the wing through the turn. This increases confidence and will make them not hold onto the back handle for dear life.
2. Looking through the turn. A lot of time people are staring at the nose of the board during the gybe, because they are afraid of breaching the foil. The funny part is that looking down at the board shifts your weight back which in turn causes you to ride nose up (resulting in either a stall or a breach). If you look all the way through the turn, you will notice the board glides more level.
3. Moving your old front hand up and to the outside of the turn. This helps you in lighter conditions as the wing wont be in front of you. If you move it to the outside, you can pull it back in front of you when you are almost finished with the turn.

Thank you Gwen! I’ve had some difficulty with stalling when jibing in my switch stance - these will be great to practice when the snow melts! Cheers!

Right on the nail head. I am struggling with jibing for like 6 months now, and am stuck exactly at the point Gwen describes: stalling after 90 degrees, fighting franticly with my hands to switch the front hand and finding the back handle somewhere in front of me… only ti end up in the water.
Focusing on moving the board around the jibing course and not on handling the wing is indeed the key.
Thank you very much Gwen, will work accordingly

... such an excellent video. I'm a little nervous practicing this because I go alone, no one on the lake, water temp is 33-35F, air temp is in 60's today. Last Thursday I was practicing a 90 degree turn to down wind, trying to fly the board to the water without stalling. I've been one to slow flight the board at riding height until the board stalls and falls to the water. Your advice to maintain a pitch attitude that allows you to touch down without stalling makes so much sense as a way to avoid the gnarly falls. As a flight instructor for years, I should have intuitively known that stalling a foil unintentionally is not a safe practice. Thanks so much for the 3 step process!!

Gwen
You have made it so simple and logical
I’m currently making about 90% of my gybes but usually come unstuck when I switch boards and or foil combos.
It will be a great exercise to do the 3 drills whenever I change something just to get the feel for the new setup.

Now I’m going to do the drills on my switch stance so I can finally gybe both stances .

Thx for the drills… waiting for wind since 5 weeks in the Netherlands and only 8 degrees, you’re lucky overthere🌴

Thanks Gwen! When I first heard of the glide to a stop drill I actually ignored it and progression was slow. When I started doing this drill the results were amazing. Just do it!
