Is The Four-Cylinder Good Enough? (Ford Ranger Sport Bi-Turbo 2.0 2022 review)

The new Ford Ranger is available with a diesel V6, but the old biturbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel soldiers on. Is the 4cyl enough? Do you really need to spend $3000 more on the V6?

OTHER FORD VIDEOS TO WATCH:

The new 2022 Ford Ranger Sport comes standard with a 154kW (206 hp) 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel four-cylinder engine. For $3000 more, you can have it with a 184kW (246 hp) 3.0-litre single-turbo diesel V6. So, which way should you go? We look into the question in this review of the T6.2 Ford Ranger Sport Biturbo, which costs $63K.

Ford’s latest Ranger ute competes with the Toyota Hilux, outgoing Volkswagen Amarok, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50 and others.

I have a V6 Platinum. I previously had a 2019 2.0 bi-turbo wildtrak. It's night and day. The 3.0 is much better. It is very thirsty!

Took my 2017 Everest into service and they gave me a new Ranger loaner and I can tell you the new model is leaps and bounds better, so much better I'm now considering an upgrade :)

The biggest advantage of the V6 other than the full time 4WD is NVH levels. It's a far smoother, quieter and nicer drive than the 2.0L. If you chip and exhaust the V6 (Not for everyone) you will wake it up. I also think long term re-sale value will be far better with the V6.

For those interested in how Australian prices for these are inflated here is the price in Thailand for a bi turbo Wildtrak. AUD 58, 400 There’s no v6 here yet.

If you get the Bi Turbo with 10 speed it is not slow at all 'for a ute' because the very low gear and close ratio, plus a few overdrive gears. I test drove a 2.0 Bi turbo 10AT Everest here in Thailand and am surprised by the acceleration from 0-120km/h. Once reached 120km/h the overdrive gear settle the engine speed down to about 1500rpm, can bearly hear the diesel, more wind noise and road noise, which are also minimal at this speed. For long ride it should be pleasant.
The weaker 2 liter with 6AT is a very different story though.
The new Raptor with the 3.0L twinturbo V6 is a beast. It is not sportscar fast but it is a supertruck.

The biturbo Ford 2.0 with the 10sp is a fantastic unit, simply all you need in a car like this, including Everest.

They are a lot better than the previous model. I’ve order the wildtrak but would have liked to have seen the top dash glovebox on the XLT also for my staff and a headsup display on the wildtrak don’t know why they didn’t do this as standard.

Thanks for the review of the 4 cylinder 2.0L Ranger and comparison to the V6 model. The 2.0L is clearly very capable and would satisfy many but as you suggest for the sake of stretching the finances a little I appreciate why there will folk that opt for the higher spec and more powerful V6 model.

I wonder what the actual street price diff between the two engines will be. I suspect it's more than $3k, because your more likely to get a deal on the 2.0.

The load testing request as mentioned on other comments. Pick up a 2nd hand 1000;t water container (will fit in the tub), put in the tub empty and fill it with water. there is your load. you can even change/adjust the load easily. Then strap it down. Tests a lot of items for anyone actually going to use these utes/trucks for work or the occasional large load. Just an Idea for testing.

I was looking at the road thinking that it was very familiar. Then it dawned on me, it’s the Honda facility at St. Ives. I used to work for the local council that took care of it between the police no longer using it and Honda coming in. Did quite a few flying laps in various vehicles after hours 😂. Great fun long ago

I got my 4cyl Wildtrak and its friggin amazing., Sure the V6 would be nice but the extra power and 4A isnt a massive deal breaker.

IMO if you want to wait and pay the extra, go for the V6 but the 4banger can tow and carry just as much as the V6 and is insanely capable. I only ever thought that a motorbike would leave me grinning after a day on the road but this thing is amazing.

I would trust the 2.0 twin turbo for long term reliability much more than the Ford V6 which has had a pretty poor reliability record over many years. Specifically the V6 was used by Jaguar LandRover and suffered crankshaft failures. It may well have had new crankshaft material since they moved production but I would take some persuading after many previous promises.
The main attraction of the V6 is the uprated driveline, especially the ability to use full time 4x4 engagement which is in a different league to the part time system otherwise fitted.

Hmmm, one povo version of a Ranger, or a GWM Cannon AND a Jayco Outback for the same money...

The 2.0 bi turbo resale value will drop significantly with the v6 being available now.

its going to be interesting to see all the potential engine failures due to the "Wet Belt" arrangement in the 2.0 litre Biturbo's when the model is around 6 years old or over 150000 kms, in the UK there are many failing, not sure what Ford were thinking putting a rubber oil pump belt and timing belt submersed in engine oil?

2020 Ranger Raptor here and 28k km on the odo. More than happy with the 2.0l biturbo. The vehicle is already huge and tall and I do not need to be any quicker and faster for its size. Rhe new one is too bulky, but I like the full time 4wd and the tilted steering wheel, thats all.
