Hi, a kyudoka here (Heki ryu insai-ha specifically). I think it's important to note that there's large difference between the historical Japanese archery done in the battlefield and the one done today.

To generalize, todays techniques are mostly for show/ritual. It is weak, forced and slow. It only appears smooth because our bows are extremely weak, around 12kg or 25# is a typical weight. Even my school, which is supposed to be a type of battlefield foot archery has fallen down this line.

It's quite recent too, less than 100 years ago the most common weight in our school was 35kg or a little under 80#. You can probably tell I'm quite bitter about this haha, but it's still a fun shooting style despite it's shortcomings.
