This the Japan Kyudo Championships in the beautiful Shiseikan Budojo at Meiji Jingu (shrine) in Tokyo. While Kyudo can be a contemplative martial art, it can also be a fiercely contested tournament where top masters compete to be the champion of Japan.
Music is by our good friend Baptiste Tavernier.

Remember kids, this is how you practise archery in a library.

As a western longbow user the Japanese style of archery is very different but quite mesmerizing in its sophistication. Respect.

This is how you miss your shot gracefully

It’s more like a performance on elegance and movement than it is accuracy. It’s like ballet.

This is so serene it's almost like yoga. It must be very relaxing.

Kyudo is more of an art of meditation than archery

The best part of Kyudo tournaments is when they end in a showdown because the last two competitors won't miss. Then it becomes a test of nerve, serenity, and endurance and the first to blink loses. It's a tense competition at that point.

The most civilized competition I’ve ever seen. It’s like no one opposed anyone. And there aren’t any winners or losers.
