Why I Use Linux

Its not Privacy, Security, OR Stability.

Linux is none of the things people say, but it is still my favorite for a variety of other reasons and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I came to realization a while ago that one of the main reasons i use linux is to not deal with microsoft bullshit.

"I just need the operating system NOT getting in my way".
This is the quote of this new decade and it should be printed and hanged in every offices around the world.
Edit: I am watching this video and writing this comment on Ubuntu 24.10 on my 2012 Mac Mini that Linux gave another life!

The only reasons I use Linux is because I have the control over my own system, it has privacy and it has no adware.

Real reason: "I use arch btw"

Linux is good for the environment because you don't need to throw away your computer just because the new Microsoft OS won't work on it.

Back in 2005, I started using Linux because it was better on older hardware. I had very little money, so I was on cheap / free PCs and the price of a windows activation key was out of the question. I didn't like the idea of pirating windows, so Linux ticked all the boxes.

I use Linux now on modern hardware because I also find Windows to be more of an advertising system than an operating system

I've been a Windows user since Windows 98 & up until I've experience Windows 11, it gave me so much frustration with the "Questionable" choices they've been doing. It got to a point where I decided to switch to Linux. I chose Linux Mint due to the being a beginners Linux with a familiar windows layout. I've been using Linux Mint for 2 years now & it's been a much more peaceful experience than I had than with Windows 11.

Dude, Microsoft is why I'm considering switching. Microsoft, the company doesn't care at all what users want and they just install copilot without asking the user.

I was bulldozed from Linux to Mac about 6 months ago at work.

The things that I really despise is
* Filesystem is extremely slow.
* It requires frequent reboots or gets very sluggish
* How the windows are managed
* How multi desktop is managed
* Keyboard combinations are horrible and unergonomic

It feels like a demo system where the golden happy path is good, but everything else is rough or broken.

No wonder they won't call it a Personal Computer when they remove every possibility to make it personal :)

Nobody wants to use Windows, most have to. Linux is something you want to use, because you can bend it to your will and it's totally up for that. The other guys fight you till the end, if you don't allow them to bend YOU into THEIR business model.

I’m from the DOS generation so Linux for me just felt right and I enjoy tinkering and having it work exactly how I want!

For more than 25 years I used Windows and I loved it. But the main reason why I am moving to Linux is: I do not trust MS anymore.

Don't tell Facebook you use Linux.

Literally the same. Out of all the "usable" OS, i hate Linux the least.

I didn't want to "upgrade" from Win2k to Xp, so I installed Suse 9.1. Not had a MS OS at home since then. Linux used to be a pain in the arse so I had a lot to learn. Then Ubuntu happened. It just works. After too many calls from family and friends asking for help with their computer I just started installing Ubuntu. No more calls. Windows is now the OS that requires technical knowledge. I've forgotten most of what I learned in my early Linux adventures.

A big thing for me is that when something breaks the Linux tells you what went wrong. I HATE Windows error codes with no documentation and googling it just lead to random windows forums where people just shrug and say "I dunno, just try messing with random stuff and maybe it works?"

There's a fact though. Almost all of Hardcore Linux users have Windows somewhere, either on a VM, or another PC or as a dual boot. That 70% market share is hard to ignore.

the upper bound of almost everything you could want to maximise is Linux, but the lower bound is also probably Linux

Breaking Linux is the beginning of learning Linux. 👍
