This Is Why I Use Linux | Windows Slander

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

Linux users will never get over the fact that windows can run most viruses while Linux runs almost none 🗿

Having a laptop/desktop is bloatware. A true Linux user only uses pen and paper living in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. 👍

I've been using Linux as my main OS for 2 years now, and while I don't regret it I really don't think it is for everyone. It's really only for people that are willing to fix problems when they arise, as they do pop up especially if you are trying to work with any windows software under wine.

Just made the Switch to Arch (I use Arch btw) as a programmer and big time gamer, first time setup was a hassle but once I got everything set up I'm good to go, every game that I used to play still works and if it doesn't there's ways to make it work because if you tell Linux to do something, it does and if it complains you force it.. I bought the whole PC so I'm gonna use the whole PC!

Me: *Tries uninstalling edge*
Windows: NOOO YOUR PC WILL EXPLODE!!!

Me: *Uninstalls the firmware*
Linux: Are you sure, this will render your PC unbootable.
Me: *sudo Uninstalls the firmware*
Linux: Bet.

Have used linux essentially exclusively as my day to day desktop since about 1998 except for SSH into an old windows machine a couple times a year to run Quickbooks. Finally bit the bullet and devoted the time to transitioned to GNUCash a couple years ago and been 100% windows free ever since. Although I was a software engineer using linux for development for years, since retiring about 15 years ago my sys admin skills have become so rusty they are no longer existent yet I still have no problems using linux exclusively. It's been just that easy for years.

Look... Let's be honest. If you are smart enough to install Linux, then you're smart enough to not get computer viruses in the first place.

I used to be an exclusive Mac user, but now I use arch linux and it's honestly amazing. Here's one thing about Linux that I really like. Any system error on linux will tell you EXACTLY what it is, and how to fix it. Macos and windows errors are just "uhhhh theres a problem, screw you". Also hyprland tiling wm > Mac desktop

I've used Linux for years, and while I had the odd stumble here and there (I'm looking at held broken packages for a more prevalent example), it's never given me any problem except when the hard drive or SSD were failing, which I took as an indicator to back things up in the event of utter failure.

Been streaming on twitch for 3 years and swapped over to PopOS after every windows system in my broadcast fleet systemically broke and blue screened [with the main system having its drives nuked] in the course of five seconds

Linux does not have all the tools I used prior, but outside of software setup, nothings broken since. It's this reliability of "set it up and it'll stay up" that's been the biggest blessing

Just turn the power switch off. It's going to shut down instantly whether it wants to or not, no matter what operating system it's running on....😉
