BEGINNER'S GUIDE to Overclocking a Coffee Lake i7 9700K to 5.2GHz on EVGA Z390 DARK

preview_player
Показать описание
This is a tutorial on how to overclock your more affordable 9th generation Coffee Lake 8 Core CPU to 5GHz and beyond using the EVGA Z390 Dark motherboard. The motherboard offers a very strong power delivery for both CPU and memory overclocking, and there are a couple of very handy overclocking profiles already integrated to the bios, which you can use to your liking.

Remember that every CPU is different and overclocks differently. Also if you wish to try my 5.2GHz daily profile with up to 4300MHz 17-18-18 memories you need to have a very strong DDR4 kit, with Samsung B-die memory chips and preferably A2 PCB.

I have my i7 9700k overclocked to 4, 97ghz ( basically 5ghz ) with a basic noctua single fan cooler (Noctua nh 12 s) and temps are surprisingly fine

Currently using ASRock Z390 PG ITX board w/ 9700K @ 5Ghz (4.5ghz ring) 1.345v LLC2. Prime95 Small FFT w/ AVX stable; 5x 60A Intersil powerstages on the ASRock (same MOSFET on EVGA Z390 Dark VRM, but I think 10x-12x instead of just 5x) roast themselves to 105-107C max temp after ~30-45min of small FFT-AVX (Noctua 40mm fan blowing air onto the VRM heatsink) due to 220-240W power draw according to HWINFO. Non-AVX Prime95 Small FFT power draw is reduced to 170W-180W, and VRM temperatures never go above 70-80C on this board as long as you aren't using 200W+ AVX Small FFT workload.

Teamgroup T-Force Nighthawk 8gb x2 DDR4-4000 (18-20-20-44 1.35v) Samsung B-Die A2 PCB, playing around so far reached 4266 18-18-18-38-2T tRFC-374 tREFI-33275 tWR-16 tFAW-16 tCWL-16 tCKE-8 @ 1.4v, 1hr (W)GSAT mem stress test, 400% HCI Memtest, Prime95 AVX LargeFFT stable (VCCIO 1.18v/VCCSA 1.2v). I set the rest of the tertiary timings (e.g. tRRD/tRDRD/tRDWR/etc.) to 6-8ish so far, but maybe I should tighten my timings at 4133 using 1.45v instead. AIDA64 Read gives roughly 60-61gb, Write 61-63gb, Copy 53-57gb, Latency 39-41ns.

I'll give some of your daily settings here a shot, ty for upload! I might save up for the Z390 Dark board w/ a 9900K(S) if Z490 looks heavily postponed until 2021 due to the current situation.

Kiitos tästä! Mukavan yksityiskohtasesti selitetty, ja ei tästä kellottamisesta olisi tullut mitään ilman tätä.

Quick question, I’m still new to this

I’ve only boosted the clocks to 5ghz on my asrock z390 motherboard without touching voltages. For 4 weeks, it’s been stable, gaming and multiple uses at 1.36v (Cinabench R20)

However, while testing it doesn’t stay at exactly at 5ghz all the time, it drops to 4998mhz a lot of the time. Same thing happens I push it to 5.1ghz, still goes to 5098mhz. Why won’t it stay on the clocks the whole time?

Luumi, I have a evga z370 micro. Im having hard time getting it to 5ghz or 5.2ghz. My cpu frequency keeps fluctuating 4.7-4.8ghz. Im scared to raise the voltage on it past 1.35v. Qlso prime95 makes my cpu hit 99celsius

En ymmärrä tosta ylikellottamisesta paskaakaa, mulla on sama prossu ja 2 x 16gb 2666MHz DDR4 muistia. Menee varmaa rikki jos alan säätää tietämättä mitä teen.

I have 120mm aio cooler would i be fine to overclock to 4.9ghz?

so for a CPU like a 9600K you would use a voltage between 1.25V and 1.3V for 5.0 GHZ? Great vid thank you very much for sharing your knowledge

meanwhile my 9700k wont even boot on 5.1ghz 1.38v

Video was very informative for a ton of people for sure, i would like to ask if you tried to run any coffee lake cpu for long period of time at 1.4v...is it any healthy for the chip? i would like to try it since temperatures are not a problem for me, actually my 8086k passed 2 hs of stress testing...however hwinfo64 reported me a "hardware error" in the middle. Btw i saw you swapped straight from 5ghz to 5, 2ghz w/o closing prime95 at all...i actually had some issues with that version in the past; for some reason sometimes if u stop the stress test or something like that, does not matter which setting u apply, some cores drop in load to 0....the only fix i found for this is just killing the process in task manager / task bar icon and actually i heard an overclocker reporting this in some lives, weird.

Wow that temps are awesome, which cpu cooler do you have there?

All of this applies to 8th generation Intel right? Do you think its possible to reach 4000MHz with 2x8GB kit on a T-Topology board? Using A1 B-Die.

@luumi is there any way we can get a LUUMI profile for daily X299 dark use with an upcoming bios? I know I can copy your settings from previous vids but its SUPER helpful just being one click GOOD!

I LOVE your z390dark profile. It ran flawless for me with great bdie
