I'm sure you're overall point is spot on. And I'm 44, and we totally used "whatever" when I was in high school, just watch the movie "clueless". "whatever" had different contexts. So even though we used "whatever" as an expression of contempt (think "OK boomer"), we still used "like" and "whatever" as filler words. The way I express myself has evolved but I still occasionally use my high school slang.

I used "whatever" in junior high and high school - and I'll be 60 end of this year and STILL use it, so using "whatever" isn't really a strong indication in "decoding secrets in speech patterns". When evaluating someone, try words that are a lot newer, or are just catching on.

In this clip I only heard her say “Whatever, ” which is solidly a Gen-X thing, which she is.

So, Chase, I’m 52 and from the original generation of youth that used the phrase “whatever”. I still use that phrase but not like LVD used it. More likely when I’m disagreeing with someone in conversation as an out. That’s how we used it back in the day. I can promise you it’s not bc of being susceptible to this generations social cues.

It’s the “upspeak” and the insertion of “like” every other word that will result in me tuning out.

I’ve always been pretty good at picking out subtle speech patterns, but I’ve never thought about how to apply what I notice. Thanks for the info!

I just bought your book, ‘The elipsis manual’ well I first bought the audible version and then I realised this book calls for serious study, so I decided to buy the kindle version too.
I’m looking forward to it. Thank you in advance. I just know I’m going to be a better all round person for it.

My father used 'Blah blah blah', 'Whatever' quite a lot, and into his 80s. He'd never been on social media in his life, let alone been influenced by young people.

Her children were buried a couple miles from here. She got 3 concescutive life sentences... we are seeing her husband on trial right now for the same 3 murders .... now she is awaiting the trial for the murder of her previous husband.

Not necessarily. I am 65 but i include phrases from other genres when I talk because I like those phrases. If im applying for a job, my goai is to find a good fit where I will be a benefit to the company, and happy working there. I wouldn't apply for a job i didnt really want to do anyway. But not knowing when the last time she worked full time could be a clue. She could have been a stay at home mom and picked up her speech habits from her kids. Dont jump to conclusions.

Interesting explanation, Chase. I see a middle aged women who is trying to project a younger (childlike, innocent), smaller image (not capable, vulnerable) and her language affect is teenage and immature. “No threat here…I’m a victim”. Thoughts anyone?
