DeWALT XR FlexVolt Batteries - Top 3 Things You Need to Know

The dream for some is a completely cord-free job site. No trailing power cords to trip over. No noisy generators drowning out the tunes from your job site radio.

While we’re seeing more and more tools like planers and grinders push the barriers of cordless power tool technology, heavy-duty tools such as table saws and big bladed circular saws still needed a power cord in order to do the jobs required of them.

That was until DeWALT launched its XR FlexVolt battery range, offering 54v of power. As a result, a new category of cordless power tool becomes available, and in this guide, we’ll cover the Top 3 Things you need to know about the XR FlexVolt battery platform.

#1 - It's the Evolution Many of You Have Been Waiting For

Dewalt's UK and ROI managing director said:
"To put this simply, the DEWALT XR FLEXVOLT range is the next chapter in cordless technology. DEWALT is launching a range of tools that are not just extremely powerful – they will also provide in excess of a full day’s runtime on a single charge for most users. The potential for this technology is limitless: for each and every trade."

#2 - It's a Convertable Battery Platform - the World's First

The new batteries are both 18v and 54v and they're completely backwards compatible with all of DeWALT's massive 18v XR range. The company promises that slotting one of these new XR batteries into your 18v cordless tool will give you "unbeatable runtime”.

We also saw a slight increase in the power available from the 18v XR tools using the new batteries, perhaps suggesting that the fabled power bump to 20v is actually possible.
The battery has the option to "amplify its voltage" to an unprecedented 54v, meaning they can be used on big, heavy-duty construction tools.

#3 - They Hold Lots of Charge

The new batteries, as well as being dual voltage, offering you the higher power when your tool needs it - are also 6Ah when fitted to an 18v tool, giving you charge to spare when you use them in lower draw tools such as drill drivers. Partner them with a brushless cordless tool, and you probably won't need to charge the battery at all during the day.
What about the red cap?
This is an important part of the technology, and it’s highly recommended that you keep this! It’s used to split the strings of cells within the battery to make sure it’s safe for transportation. For more information, be sure to read the Dewalt warranty information on the Toolstop website.

Dewalt believes that the 54v XR FlexVolt platform marks the beginning of a revolution on the job site, the ability to truly envisage a cordless environment where even the most power-hungry of tools can deliver the performance you need, without the power cord.

We have a full list of the tools available for this new platform on the Toolstop website, and remember, the batteries will give you existing 18v XR tools a new lease of life.

The power increase from 20 volt tools is coming from basically minimal voltage drop and high discharge rate from the type of cells used in the xr type batterys

May be good for lighter tools such as a battery drill but not on a circular concrete cutting saw. At Our work they recently replaced all our petrol saws with these and the battery will cut 40 roof tiles max compared to a fill of petrol lasting most of the day.
No use at all for heavy usage, we would need about 4 fully charged batteries a day if we’re doing a technical roof and they seem to take about 3-4 hours to charge

So at 18v this is 6ah and at 54v it is a 2ah battery?

A guy at work used a brand new 20v Sawzall (I'm in the states) and used a flexvolt battery and fried the Sawzall the first time using it.

He claimed they told him the flex vold will increase in voltage as needed under load. He made it sound like it will go past 18/20v when pushed hard enough which makes me want to reconsider using my flexvolt on my cordless mitre saw.

MY BATTERY WON'T CHARGE AT ALL. I HAVE ONLY USED IT A COUPLE OF TIMES, ON A DCM 575 CHAINSAW. AS FAR AS I CAN SEE, THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM, SOMETHING TO DO WIT LOW VOLTAGE THRESHOLD.

I have several. One just died. How easy is it to return. Do I just walk into Home Depot and show date on battery. Or is this not worth fighting. Battery is 1.5 years old. And it’s 9 ah

The power increase is not a "purhaps suggestion", its basic electronics... Volts x Amps = Watts. 18v x 5Ah = 90w
So 18v that now has a 6AH batter now has 108w or at 9AH, you now have 162watts.

If you run a higher voltage, you also get a much faster RPM on a brushless motor too.

18v might get you 4k RPM, so 54v might get you 12k RPM, which of course is ideal for saws...

What we now need is updates on what each tool can utilise as a maximum. So if we stick a 12Ah battery on an 18v sander, what's the maximum watts the sander will run at before it simply just means an extension in runtime rather than an increase in power?

I have an old hardly used 24v chop saw, can I use one of these batteries with it? I would prefer to use a 240v mains.

I hope they build better more Ah batteries, they have up to 6Ah but i wish for 10Ah to last for 24hours a day without a charge!
