Do Catholics Believe in 'Signs from the Dead'?

Does a passing blue jay remind you of a deceased loved one? Does a specific number or color call their loss to your memory? Could they be speaking to you through these signs?

Today, Fr. Mike opens up about navigating the loss of his own mother and finding hope and peace in the midst of that grief. The bottom line is, your loved ones can't cause these "signs" to happen—only God can work in nature in that way. But these unexpected occurrences can be a reminder to pray for your loved ones and to recall the gift of their lives.

My youngest daughter passed away at 10 weeks old in 2021. When you said “my baby was real.” It hit me hard hard. I repeated it to myself when I look at the few photos we have of her. But she was real, she was really here. For a short time we held and loved her. My baby was real. Thank you, Father Mike for this 💗 St. Capri, Ora pro nobis.

When my mother passed the next morning my father told me that he saw mom in his dreams. He said she was just as clear as day, he heard her voice and it was her. I asked him what she said, and he told me she said "she was ok, and not to worry." What I didn't tell him was that she'd ALSO come to my dreams that same night, told me the same thing, but also said "take care of your dad, he's not far behind." We had absolutely zero idea that he had lung cancer, which we discovered about a month later. Dad was gone in 6 months. Two identical dreams, with that one difference, which to me is just a special blessing, and I can't dismiss it. So I take it as my mom comforting us as best she could and going to her reward.

My Dad passed away last May 2022, after 40 days, A white butterfly shows up in my mom's living room every 7ishpm everyday for almost a year. Everyone calls it "visitor" and we just say hi, hello...
There are times, it will kinda dance around in front of everyone in the house and at times, it will land on my mom's lap. It stays through out the night & disappear each morning.
After my dad's 1st death anniversary, we didn't see it anymore.
For a year after his passing, we made sure we offer a mass for my dad's soul once a week, every Monday in particular!
God bless us all~

22 years ago, I sat by my husband when he passed away from cancer. I looked at the clock to see the time of death. Now, whenever I see that same time. AM or PM I say a prayer for him and all the souls in purgatory.

Signs are beautiful after a loved one has passed but we need to pray for their souls as long as we are alive!❤

When my Dad died I got up to use the restroom and get some water, and a voice told me someone wanted to see me in the kitchen. It's a voice I've heard before during times of grief, it's audible but no one is around: perhaps my guardian angel, I went into the kitchen and my Dad was sitting at the kitchen table. I looked at him and said "Dad, I miss, miss, miss you" he said "I know but I'm okay" I told him we; meaning my wife and kids, were okay too, and he said "I know you are, well, I gotta go" and he left. It was so awesome, and I know he's okay.

My Mom, always said "When I die, I'm gonna go running to Jesus", when she dies the only one that was able to be with her was my niece, my mom's death happened quick. My niece said that when she died her legs were running. I miss them both very much but I know they are okay.

About 10 yrs after my fathers passing and my mother in a nursing home, my sister and I were living together. She suffered from a couple serious illnesses and was unable to live on her own. Her future was always a concern for my parents and weighed heavy on them both, but especially my father. One night while her and I were cleaning up the kitchen from a big meal, I turned towards the dining room and to my shock there stood my father. He didn’t say anything and had his back slightly turned away from us. Almost as quickly as he appeared, he was gone again. I believe he visited to check on my sister to make sure she was ok. Upon hearing our conversation and laughter I believe he finally had peace and could rest knowing that she was being taken care of. What a special gift.

Jesus comforts the broken hearted. He did many things to comfort my family after my son died by suicide. Maybe it was because He knew we needed these little things so we would not lose hope and to truly trust in Him. I choose to believe that God comforts to reveal His love. He is a good Father. I am thankful for all the little “graces” that He revealed. My hope is that anything that leads you deeper to the love of God cannot be from the evil one. Pray always for your deceased loved ones and trust in Jesus’ mercy! Jesus I Trust in You! ❤️

Right after my special needs son passed, everyday for a week straight a large blue dragonfly would land on the screen of my younger son's window and stay there all day, leave and then come back in the morning. Still to this day, every time I see a big blue dragonfly I say "hello" to my boy. I am very grateful for these experiences.

I recently lost my mom, and we buried her the day after Mother's Day. What made this so hard for me is that my dad died on Father's Day in 2019, so the loss of my mother dealt me a major blow. I fell into a major depression and am still trying to climb out of it through prayer. I won't go into the details of what I am going through because I feel that this is my own personal journey with the Lord, and I am trying to embrace this suffering. I won't lie, I beg God to let me know in some way that mom is at eternal peace with my dad in heaven. I pray this so hard with tears free flowing from my eyes when I go to bed. I love the idea of what you (Fr. Mike) said about seeing something that reminds me of a loved one. Not to look at it as a sign, but as an invitation to pray for the remembered loved one. From now on this will be a constant practice for me!!! Thank you!!!

The night a loved one passed, they appeared to my grieving mother, and changed into a hellish face, my mom, strong in faith called on Christ Jesus and the apparition was swept away. The enemy is always watching and listening for any crack or crevice in faith to attack us. The power of God is absolute and anything is possible in him. Thank you Father Mike and Ascension for doing your part in helping to bring me from atheism to the Catholic faith. You've helped my family enormously. Thank you Jesus!

My son passed away in 2021. The night he died I saw him in my bedroom doorway. He said "Wake up, you have company." Two days later my mil, bil, husband and I were sitting at the dining room table and from down the hall, where his room and my older son's rooms are, a voice as clear as day said "Hey pops" which is what both my boys call their dad. I told my husband my older son was calling him. He went down there and my older son was fast asleep. No one else heard the voice. I absolutely believe these instances were God letting me see/hear my son to offer me comfort. I wasn't looking for signs or asking for signs. God knew what I needed. I still pray for God's mercy, because thats all I can rely on.

My niece died at the age of 18 from acute alcohol consumption because it was provided to her by an adult woman. We don't know the exact time she passed away. My sister didn't find out until about 10:30 am when friends called her about police presence at an apartment she was known to hang out. This happened in northern Minnesota. My sister had to call her older brother in northern Arizona to break the news. He told her "Mom, I was sound asleep and I heard her voice at 4:30 am calling my name...'Austin! Austin!' ". He woke up immediately and recognized her voice. He asked his girlfriend if she heard anything. She said "I heard someone call your name twice." I believe that God allowed her to send her brother one last message as she passed away. 5 1/2 hours later the 911 call was made in Minnesota. We were very comforted when we heard about this. Her name was Ambria and she was baptized Catholic as an infant.

My best God wink/ comfort from God was this- my Dad died in 2019. Last year on his birthday I was feeling so sad with grief and missing him. I was walking my dog and was near tears when I saw something lying in the road. It was a willow tree angel, and it was the one holding a bouquet of rosemary for remembrance. 💗

On the night that my mother died, I was smoking a cigar in my patio and felt a gentle breeze followed by a hand gently grabbing my right arm. After that, my Dad came out and told me Mom had passed. This wonderful gift is something I will always treasure ❤.

Anyone from the Chicago area is familiar with the tragic fire at Our Lady of the Angels school in 1958 that killed 92 students and 3 Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. One family lost their son, and his Sicilian mother was grief stricken, and could not stop crying. She stopped functioning, and it was up to the husband to keep his family going on with life. Several months after the fire, God sent a visitation to the mother. In her sleep, her son came to her. She could touch him. He was warm. She could smell his scent. He told her he was happy and with Jesus and he was sent to her so she could stop grieving. It worked and she was able to accept her loss and live again.

I had Covid one December. I was not doing well and people around me were trying to get me to go to the hospital. On a cold day when almost all birds had migrated south, a Cardinal appeared on the window sill in the room I was quarantined in. The bird looked into my room and we made eye contact. My mom had passed away 3 years before. No, it wasn't my mom, but it is exactly the sign my mom would want to send to get my attention. We would always look for Cardinals and get excited because they were beautiful and rare.

I also know my mom was hard to say no to. If she asked our Father to send a cardinal to send me a message, he'd send a cardinal. I went to the hospital and stayed 3 days. It likely saved my life.

Father, we don't need the beauty of flowers or the Shroud of Turin to believe in Jesus, BUT, if God gives these comforting signs, we should receive them with humble thanksgivings.

Oh, I have had a sign from my cousin and he was VERY devout. I just believe, not that he's acting outside of his ability, but that God sent him to make the sign. We are all His messengers.
