Mega Edition: Christian Outlets Respond to John Cooper's 'Deconstruction' Statement

Recently John Cooper, from the Rock band Skillet, made a statement against Christians deconstructing their faith. What followed was an attempt by evangelical publications to distance themselves from Cooper's message. In this episode, Jon examines secular definitions of deconstruction, talks about James Cone's deconstruction, and opposes Christians who want too somehow find common cause with deconstructionists.

I am incredibly thankful for John Cooper and his fidelity to the Word of God and his boldness in the throes of cancel culture and progressive compromise. He has been a light in the darkness and a great reminder of courage to our family. 🙏🏻

We need to call "deconstructing faith" what it really is: apostasy. We may be witnessing the great falling away that Paul spoke about.

Bingo! Deconstructionism is just the old " had God said?" from the garden.

I’m 56 years old, I was of fan of John Cooper (Skillet) since the late 90’s. I got married had kids and took then to see skillet in 2010. Life went on and I rediscovered John in 2018…
I still love him . His message of the gospel has never waivered

Praying regularly for Jon Harris, John Cooper, John MacArthur... among others.. who are fighting on the front lines of the culture war. Thank you so much!

Deconstruction is best understood as Destruction with a "con" in it.

Kind of a tangential point, but one of the more frustrating things about many of the high-profile folks who have very loudly gone out from us is the utter ignorance (yet confidence) in which they do so. "How does a loving God allow pain and suffering in the world? Nobody talks about it." Well, yes, we do, and we have been for many centuries. Many Christians have written serious and thoughtful treatments of these subjects, going back to the earliest centuries of the church. Find them unsatisfying if you will, but to act like they don't exist just demonstrates that you don't know what you're talking about. And if these burning questions weren't troublesome enough for you to expend the least effort in trying to answer, perhaps they weren't really the reason you left in the first place.

Why do 'deconstructionists' have to go public with their walk away?
To draw others with them? Romans 1:32.

I knew nothing of John Cooper before discovering his podcast. My husband listened to Skillet in our younger years, so he knew! Cooper's book is great. It is easy to read and to understand. I so appreciate his boldness to speak against the tidal wave of deconstruction, wokeness, and progressivism. Cooper, Jon Harris, AD Robles, John MacArthur, the Fight Laugh Feast guys, Jason Whitaker, et al are doing God's work. Jon, I believe you are correct. You have been called out to do exactly what you are doing right now. Please keep it going.

Why can left-leaning evangelicals correct or condemn conservative Christians, but conservatives are just deemed 'preachy' and devisive? Do these people have no self-awareness... or is it no scruples?

John Bunyan pegged this kind of approach correctly many years ago. So thankful for this simple but godly man. Here is his description of Mr. Pliable from Pilgrim’s Progress.
“As Pliable and Christian find themselves walking together toward the narrow gate, we see the stark contrast between the two pilgrims. One is burdened; the other is not. One is clutching a book that is a light to his path. The other is guideless. One is on the journey in pursuit of deliverance from besetting sins and rest for his soul. The other is on the journey in order to obtain future delights that temporarily dazzle his mind. One is slow and plodding because of his great weight and a sense of his own unrighteousness; the other is light-footed and impatient to obtain all the benefits of Heaven. One is in motion because his soul has been stirred up to both fear and hope; the other is dead to any spiritual fears,
longings, or aspirations. One is seeking God; the other is seeking self-satisfaction. One is a true pilgrim; the other is false and fading.“

You're right, Jon. I listen because you are thorough and provide the sources. It has helped me better address these issues directly in the moment.

John Cooper is totally on point. I think y’all would have a lot in common for sure. I love John Cooper’s podcast. It’s 🔥🔥🔥
Also, I ordered some tea and it’s great! Thanks for turning us on to it! I particularly like the cacao tea.

It’s getting tiresome that the people with a platform always seem to critique the good guys assuming the absolute worst possible intentions and then sticking up for the other ones assuming pure ones. 🙄

I'm a southern baptist and I absolutely love your content. My pastor, Greg Roberts at Indian Springs Baptist Church in Miccosukee, FL is the one who turned me on to you. He loves your content. I'm so glad he told me about you. Thanks for standing up for truth. We really appreciate all you do for the Lord.

Most people don't steep their tea longer than the instructions because oversteeping tea can lead to a bitter taste. There are tannins in tea, when too many are released they impart a bitter taste that many (most) people find undesirable. Following the steeping instructions usually imparts the best flavor (per brand, type) before releasing too many tannins and becoming bitter.

I completely agree it absolutely sounds like Satan speaking in all this. It’s exactly what I thought before you said that.

Deconstruction is the literal opposite of “Whoever would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me”
It’s the opposite is of self-denial and death to self
