The Dark World of Megachurches

Megachurches, Televangelists, and the Prosperity Gospel... those were things that I had never heard of before... until I stumbled across an infamous interview with Kenneth Copeland by Lisa Guerrero from Inside Edition.

What ensued after was a dive into rabbit hole unlike any other, from corrupt preachers, to lavish lifestyles, to claims of miracle healings, to cult-ish followings, and New Age/New Thought concepts. This... is the dark world of Megachurches.

If Jesus went to many of these “prosperity churches”…he would do the same thing he did when he went to the temple in his day: FLIP over the tables of money!

No human I've ever seen has looked more demonic than Copeland when he smiles.

This is also a big problem in South Korea. When pastors love money and materialism, it is like flying with a blind pilot.

I'm a Christian myself and watching this made me remember one of the most chilling things I had ever heard "Demons can quote scripture too" And that's exactly what I see happening here. Thank you for shedding light on this topic, you're the one doing God's work, not these false teachers.

How the hell does a religious person look at Kenneth Copeland and not think, "That's definitely what a demon looks like"? lmao

To me it's so disheartening that church has now become a concert and a met gala for celeb-priests to gaslighting believers to get richer. I will be worshiping from home now on.

My husband and I just left a once small church, due to our pastor begging for a binding 2 year contract of donations, above monthly tithing. The guilt was even happening in the kids church! He is buying up buildings, opening trendy public coffee shops, and refuses to hold service in our “small” church building. Services have become rock concerts with smoke machines, lighting, and low budget singers acting like rockstars. It didn’t feel ok. We are now holding church in our home until we find another church. The congregation seems to want entertainment with lukewarm preaching. This is not ok. We are happy God convicted us to leave.

If biblical Christianity is true, then these people will certainly be held accountable.

These so-called celebrity preachers will hear the words, 'Depart from Me you worker of iniquity, I never knew you'.

And the fact that even Scripture, even Jesus warns about men like them, false prophets, and people still buy into their lies, is just saddening as a Christian myself

As a Christian this is so embarrassing.
Thank you for shining light on this topic, it makes those of us who disagree with TPG feel less insane.

Excellent video essay. As a Christian who has grown up in these circles, it’s great hear someone make such a well researched and fair assessment of the denomination/subculture.

Holy shit, I'm from Malaysia, I grew up in church but left, and now on my journey of deconstructing and healing my religion traumas. This video is blowing my mind!
1) Joel Osteen, Todd White, Benny Hinn, these are all pastors that my church and many other churches in the Asia follow.

2) The lay-hand-fall-back thing, istg a lot of pastors love to push you to make you fall. And when I stood my ground not wanting to fall, I got told to just allow myself to fall because only then I will allow the Holy Spirit to work on my heart.

3) The Tithes: They equate the amount of faith you have to how much you give! Telling you not to be selfish about your money with God. And because I wanted to show God how much faith I have and how grateful I am to Him, and not wanna be "selfish", of course I will feel pressure to give.

4) The "miracles": The leg growing miracle I've seen it in front of me, this trick really is being used everywhere in different churches. I also remember Benny Hinn was the hot topic in many churches as well and they held so so many healing crusades. I was young and would ask questions like "What if those people don't get healed?", then I would get answers like "it's either their faith isn't strong enough, they don't believe or it's not God's timing yet".

Not having any breakthroughs in life? Oh it's because you have harden your heart and don't allow God to work in your life; You're struggling financially? Remember to give tithes because all the money you have is given to you by God, so you should give back to Him so He will give you tenfolds; You're not healed? Oh it's because you don't have enough faith etc

Do you realize all these things, they will ALWAYS explain to you in ways to make you feel guilty, awful, to inevitably blame yourself while at the same time telling you you're blameless in God's eyes like??? It's so absurd that it's maddening.

One of the churches I grew up in was a small little church in Virginia. I remember when they finally said they had to build a new space and upgrade because the congregation and youth ministry had gotten too large.

The preacher even said "we will only build the new building with donations. If it takes us a decade, it takes us a decade" --> and sure enough, the pastor was extremely transparent and it took forever to build that new church.

"The contractors asked if I wanted stained glass, chandeliers, all these frills... I said I just want comfortable chairs" he'd give little updates like that!

He owned a little house out in the country, drove an old car, wore an old suit... a breath of fresh air in a religion that is more and more being consumed by rampant wealth/corruption and hate.

As a Christian myself, the prosperity gospel is definitely a problematic one. As Christians, we called, not to have riches on earth, but heavenly riches instead. We are called to help others, not profit off of them.

Thank you for a brilliant expose on this evil movement. I am a SA citizen, grew up in one of these churches, the damage it does is beyond words. I left as a young adult, I have a great relationship with God, have three theologies degrees and endorse every word. Well done
