Is One Justified by FAITH & WORKS or by FAITH ALONE? (James 2:24/ Galatians 2:16)

Is one justified by faith & works as the Lord's brother James teaches or by Faith Alone as Paul teaches? This is one of the major points of contention between the Catholic and Protestant faiths.

"You that man is justified by works and not by faith alone" (James 2:24)

"Yet who know that a man is NOT justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified" (Galatians 2:16).
