I appreciate how they didn't villainize the step-dad, it could have been so easy for them to do their "twist villain" trope that's gotten overused the last decade. So good on them for breaking away from that formula!

I appreciated that Barley didn't have any hang ups on his little brother being the one with the magic ability. From the first second, he was stoked and excited that HIS brother was a wizard.

I actually did remember at one point Barley said to his brother "I couldn't do it because the magic wasn't in me, but it is in you". So they did kind of straight-out say that you had to be born with the "gift" of magic.

Spoiler:

When Barley talked about seeing his dad all hooked up to tubes and not the same as the person he knew until then. and not being able to say goodbye. that resonated with me personally because when i was 13 I watched my best friend of 8 years slowly pass away from cancer and at the end, i saw him, full of tubes and i didn't know that would be my last chance to say goodbye. and this movie broke me. i agree it's not quite as good as Coco, but it means much more to me personally.

"I didn't cry while watching this movie."

What were you asleep when the van died? They made me cry over a VAN! It wasn't sentient or anything it was just a cruddy van!

This movie hit me hard, because I'm an older brother who's had to take care of multiple siblings growing up, and that scene where Ian is remembering all the times Barley was there for him... only the manliest tears were shed that day.

When barley told Ian “dad also told me to give you this” then hugged him I balled my eyes out

Most Disney movies: Uh, does not compute

The brother dynamic culminating in the checklist hit me hard. It was a very personal film for me, seeing as how I have two brothers. It won't be so personal for a lot of people, but it was for me.

Best part is that Barley was never once jealous that Ian is able to control magic and is very supportive of him

Saber's audio sounds like he's recording this from inside a giant bubble

Imagine being friends with one of these people, going to their house, and the time you walk in is the time they summon the half father thing.

Chris Pratt plays a character in a movie associated with Disney where his character was too scared to say goodbye to his parental figure.
