Did you see Onward? What did you think?

I haven't seen it yet, but just looking at the ads, the world building looks really poor. Just a few examples:
They have a pet that breaths fire, but still make houses out of wood.

A mermaid lives in the suburbs for a sight gag, despite it not really making sense to live there.

Unicorns are essentially racoons, but they still use normal trashcans. That's the equivalent of a horse going through your garbage. Plus, the brother has one painted on his van. Wouldn't it be more clever to have him paint a raccoon on there for a subtle gag?

The devil is in the details here. Yes it's a kids movie, but this is what takes it from good to great. A movie like Zootopia for instance takes time to show the different amenities for different animals, which brings the world to life. Onward just kinda haphazardly plunks fantasy elements into a human world.

Reason why I didn't go see it: The Poster and Trailer looked like a mid 2000's Dreamworks film. And it felt like this was a Pixar B-Team film while Soul will be the good Pixar film to see this year.

I had that part of the movie that felt missing issue. It felt more like a blue sky/dreamworks movie than a Pixar movie. I can’t explain why. I don’t think it’s because it’s about magic, just... feels copy and paste somewhat.

I think it's just a boring premise. "WHAT IF THINGS THAT ARE MAGICAL WERE ACTUALLY TREATED AS NORMAL" is, just, so done to death, and I think kids know that. This just doesn't look very appealing. I'm not going to see it.

Onward is weird for me. The modern world didn’t seem that interesting and I didn’t think the comedy was that great. But I actually really liked the story and characters. I think for me it’s one of those Pixar films that’s good but is mostly gonna be remembered as a middle-tier good film.

The corona virus is playing a big part in why people are avoiding going to the movies. But I can’t help but think that there wasn’t a lot of advertising or interest. Personally, in my opinion I think Shrek did it better. Yeah they both have modern fantasy mix with modern satire. But Shrek I think pulled off the satire while having a modern timeless look to it. Story and characters were good, but It’s not Pixar’s strongest. Oh and I absolutely loved the Simpsons short as strange as it was to see in front of a Disney/Pixar film and the ending with Mickey in the audience of the Gracie Films logo.

It was really jarring that they had a Simpson short before the movie. And seeing how meta Disney is being about it is only putting salt in the wound.

Because it’s ugly, poorly advertised and oh yeah, launched midst a pandemic.

People are fighting over toilet paper. You don’t need Scoobie and the gang to solve this mystery.

I'm sad Onward isn't doing well in fact I get sad whenever a film I'm looking forward to doesn't do well

I'd say because there was no hype leading up to the release 🤔

1: It looks like an off year DreamWorks film, not a Pixar film.
2: Disney just randomly dropped it. Like, why the hell early March. This is a Summer or Christmas family film. At the very, very least they should have waited till Easter Weekend.

Your use of FF6 music when describing the plot was a pretty clever touch. I dig it.

Planning to see it this weekend or next week during my spring break. But there might be 2 reasons why it’s failing at the box office.
1. The corona virus. Seems kinda obvious. It’s being spread badly, and people are scared to go outside in case they get infected.
2. The gay cyclops character. Everyone was blowing it way out of proportion (Disney’s even to blame) the movie actually got banned in a few countries because of a 2 second scene that serves no purpose to the plot!
Anyways, these are my “theories”

I'm surprised so many don't like this film. I saw it Tuesday and was actually impressed. It's all about the 2 brothers connection and their development between each other. Even though I couldn't relate to them, I definitely felt every moment of their journey. This movie ain't like Shrek like so many are saying, I think it's pretty

Unpopular opinion but I think Onward is my favorite Pixar movie. I could relate to Ian and Farley reminded me of my older brother so a lot of the sibling moments were very relatable to me. I get why people don’t like it though, it’s not for everybody

This launched amidst a pandemic, and during a period of severe backlash towards Disney. Basically what happened to Treasure Planet, except more serious this time.

Reasonable people: it released during a pandemic, it wasn’t a very good film.
My homophobic family: IT HAD A GAY CHARACTER IN IT! DEMONIC! DEMONIC!

I don’t know why it’s getting such low reviews. I’d say it’s easily top 3 Pixar movies for me. Pixar has started to explore the human relationship with death a lot in their films lately, and I think for anyone who has had to deal with close family or friends passing, these movies resonate pretty significantly. It’s also just a fun buddy/family road trip film but with a twist. If you are able to go during this time, you should absolutely see this movie ❤️

It's just another Good Dinosaur, it didn't catch people's attention like their other movies.
