In this video I share a very common alteration - how to shorten jeans. For this technique, we will not be using original hem. This alteration will be done on domestic sewing machine Singer Heavy Duty 4423, to show that this can be done using any sewing machine that you have! BONUS: try to spot my cat napping in the video! :)

To hem jeans using this technique, you'll need:
* Jeans needle or needle that's at least size 100 or higher;
* Thicker sewing thread (often call 'heavy duty', 'denim' or 'jeans' thread; select color that will work best with your jeans);
* Bulky seam aid (if you don't have this tool, you can use thicker cardboard instead).

Bulky seam aid that I use:

Best video I've seen on how to hem jeans without the original hem, simple and straight to the point. Thank you!

Thank you! Im a newbie and my husband wanted me to hem his jeans. I practiced two different methods and your resulted in a clean, neat finish. 😊

Great tutorial! Very useful information and well presented!
I regularly hem my husband’s thick heavy duty jeans and for that I find that it also helps to adjust the top thread tension quite high and use a plastic jeans sewing tool for coming down off the thick seam to avoid a thread nest on the back side. The tool is called a Jean-a-ma-jig 😊

Thank you, helpful video. I wish you had shown the bulk presser foot, I'm not familiar with it. You mentioned using cardboard instead, but I wish you had shown how that works.

How do you get a good looking top stich on the good side, when hemming from the inside??

Do you use the same thread for the bobbin too?

I usually only put the heavy thread on top. Then topstitch the hem. I may try this method. Your stitches are beautiful. What stitch length did you use?

Do I need a heavy duty sewing machine to hem denim jeans pants? Can anyone please help im confused

Why don't you just use the original hem and shorten the jeans above the hem. The only finish you have is to use zig zag stitching to cover the new raw seam. Your work looks great but the distressed look of original hemming is hard to achieve. Cheers
