Hemming Jeans with the Original Hem

I’m showing you how to hem your jeans, but leave the original hem intact! I hope you enjoy!

My daughter’s jeans are RTW from Madewell. They are no longer available.

For reference: I am 5’2” and my measurements are as follows, upper bust 36”, full bust 40”, waist 33”, hip 40”

I was at my local Janome sewing centre on Friday and the lady behind the counter was describing this very method for hemming jeans. I make my jeans and she was flabbergasted because apparently there are 'long" jeans now haha! I would have thought that someone working at a sewing machine shop would have realised that fit plays a big part in the reasons why someone sews a garment. It's really funny how you pop this video up when only on Friday I was having a discussion about the same method. And yes that's right! A hammer is a vital tool in jeans making - you can really get your frustrations out 😂.

I used this method a year ago, except I cut the jeans on the inside close to the thread seam. I like your idea of serging or using a zigzag stitch. I will follow this method in the future. Thank you❣️

I have used the same technique without the topstitching. Oh my goodness, the topstitching takes it to a much higher level. I’ll be going back and too stitching the jeans I have already shortened. Thank you so much, Whitney.

Wow, thank you so much for this! I have to admit I have the opposite problem - I have a very long inseam, but my daughter is only 5 feet tall, so even petites can be too long sometimes. This is awesome now that flares and boot cuts are back in style.

Love this method of hemming jeans and your explanation is so clear—sometimes that concept of the folding up halfway to get the whole amount or taking a seam in half of what you need to get the whole amount seems backwards until you learn to trust the math….great video!
