I just bought a mk1 1.8t today as a little cheap run about. Seems solid but there's a loud blowing noise at the front. It sounds terrible under load. I see alot of exhaust manifold talk

Is the engine covered like because of the leaks of these hoses? Recently got a Leon 1M as a project to try to learn and get experience and the whole block etc looks similarly disgusting like this and being a bit clueless about VAG cars, I'm not sure of the cause of it. I had to replace most of these pipes, what an awful design! far too many pipes in an awkward place.

Gonna remove my intake as I think the gasket is leaking. Any tips for removing the intake mani bolts as I'm afraid theyre gonna break. Try to remove with engine hot perhaps?
