We know nothing about this European explanation. But yes our country was named Guinea (Guinée) because when European arrived and saw the land, they asked the first man they saw: " what's the name of this land ?". The direction they were pointing at was a river and couple of women were there to get water. So thinking they asked him who are those people, he responded those are our "women" (moukha guinée néra). They thought oh he's saying this place is named Guinée.
Guinée: is women (plural) I'm Sousou. Guinè is: a woman.

I would only add that the meaning of the word Guinée (Guinea) in Susu language is: Woman. So the word "sister" is "nkhounya guinée ma", where "brother" is "nkhounya hame ma".

It's interesting to note that in Moroccan Arabic "brother" is "khouya". Maybe this word came with the Islamization of West Africa...

Ironically the modern Guinea region of Africa (being around Guinea-state to Cameroon) and the Guyana region of South America (Guyana-state, Suriname, French Guiana and parts of Venezuela & Brazil) are connected geographically because of Pangea.
