My thoughts on this very thought-provoking contemporary classic. Four out of five stars.

when this book came out i was seventeen, and my best friend from school and i were obsessed with it for years and years. we were in love with henry for sure back then. it used to be my comfort book, i read it when i was sick, when it was rainy outside, that sort of thing. back then there was nothing like it, and it is so much a voice of that time.
last year i read it again after a while of not having touched it, and it was such a different experience, i saw so much more of the rotten core when back when i was young i saw more of a morbid romance that fascinated me, and it was like looking in a mirror, seeing my own errors reflected, but also my own yearnings of the kind that can take us to dangerous places. i am grateful to be in a place where i can take a different, more distant perspective, but it is for sure one of the books of my life.
i love the passage you have read, those moments are masterfully weaved in, for me it's always the glasses in the empty room that get me.
thank you for this great review!

I read this book some fifteen years ago, and it really hit me in the stomach in a very visceral way. I feel like I will never forget it, and it is probably the book that has had the biggest impact on me to this day. I have read the Goldfinch as well, but it didn’t impact me as deeply as The Secret History. Well done, Donna Tartt! So interesting to hear you share your thoughts about it ⭐️

Read this book many years ago whilst traveling through Italy and was mesmerised by the plot, the writing and the truly well written characters. Great book review and would love to see you do more of these🙂 thank you xxx

Thank you for this review. I've always wanted to read Donna Tartt and this sounds like it's right up my alley. I'm exploring beauty and wildness in my novel, too, and love exceptional writing.

I mentioned this book in the comments of one of your recent videos! I read it this past year and had many of the same thoughts/feelings. It’s definitely a book that stays with you long after the final page is read. ❤

Not sure why I never stumbled upon your review of this amazing book. I read this in my late 20's, 2004-2005ish, maybe? I remember being blown away by her writing. I kept searching for other books at that time that were comparable, but sadly I never did find anything close to the way her writing (this book) made me feel. I really need to re-read this book. I think what sets Donna apart from so many other writers is that her writing is intellectually stimulating, she invokes deep feelings, and she has mastered beautiful prose. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Thank you for this great book chat. I will put this on my TBR list. From your last book recommendation video I purchased Ninth House, and I am loving it.

This book is my all time favourite. I've read it several times and I know that I will read it again. There is something amazing about it. I always want to go into the book, into the story and interact with the people. I like Tartt's other books too but still nothing compares to this.

Some interesting picks. You're lucky you have the time to read. I buy books but there's always so many other things I have to get done! LoL.
