The idea of someone standing over you just asking “why do you need utensils to eat?” Is so goddamn funny.

It's tricky, but as a Japanese I don’t usually use ‘Nan zen?’ at home. We usually say ‘Nannin bun?’(For how many people?) or something, for daily meal situations.
I think ‘zen’ is more formal and staff of shops/restaurants are trained to speak ‘grammatically correct’ Japanese.
So, of course this is a useful tip for dining-out situations.
‘Zen’ is sometimes used when counting a bowl of rice etc, but this is a rather formal expression as well, and for rice, I believe ‘hai’ is more commonly used. Like ‘Gogan ippai’ (a bowl of rice) or ‘nihai’ (two bowls)😅.
