I also highly recommend adding livestreams on social media as well. There is where I find the most "natural japanese." Personally I mix that along with re-watching anime (with japanese subtitles and Shirabe Jisho) that I've already seen in english subtitles or dubbed. I find that key because initial story and language comprehension combined makes for a frustrating duo.

I've come to the conclusion that the best method of learning ANY language is the same way all babies learn their mother language, focus on listening and speaking first, ESPECIALLY listening. Don't get caught up too much in the grammar and writing, try to take in as much input as you possibly can in the beginning. 1:04 This is exactly how Japanese students learn English in school, they can pass written tests but most of them can't really converse with native english speakers after learning it for 12 years

The hardest part for learning Japanese in my case is understanding context. I’ve heard that Japanese is a “high context language” and I already struggle with picking up context clues because I’m autistic, but I have faith that I can get better at that eventually (at least as well as I’ve gotten in English). As long as your learning methods are fun and make you happy, that’s really all you need. I have a deep love for the culture and language and that hasn’t really changed in the past year in which I’ve been learning, and I’m such a nerd for flash card memorization so I guess that works better for me

I do agree with your thoughts on learning through anime. It’s not like learning Japanese through anime will break your Japanese forever. If you can learn something incorrectly, you can unlearn it the same way you can learn anything else.

Very great video. Really appreciate all your points :)

I've been learning Japanese for 6 years. I'm nowhere near fluent, but at least I am now familiar with the grammar, which is quite intricate. It really comes down to practice and determination.

I've been taking the slow approach to learning Japanese for the last year and a half. I do like 10-20 min of apps every day, listen to 30 minutes of podcast, watch lots of anime, and play some fun Japanese games. Just trying not to burn myself out. I have been making progress though, so I'm happy. ^_^

This is probably one of the most uniquely produced vlogs I have ever seen and I am HERE FOR IT. Cutting to difference scenes every sentence or so really did a lot for keeping me engaged in what you were doing, and your points were all super spot on. I saw a video on a similar topic recently, and this was a far more entertaining video done in half the time. You really are efficient!

you have inspired me to try to learn japanese, despite its difficulty. i am 14 years old and have always wanted to try, but i have been too scared or worried of failure. i now feel that if i really give it my best and convince myself i can do it i will be able to learn. i know it sounds really stupid, but i guess your videos on the subject lit a fire in me, haha.

seriously tho your content is amazing and i look forward to watching more! thank you!

My method is easy.. when i tell you this method.. you’ll learn the language extremely fast..

#1 repetitive thinking/speaking: usually what this means is repeating all the normal stuff you say or think in your native language and learning the same thing in another language so example if you say “I’m hungry” allot.. you wanna learn that first.. then repeat every time you think or say that..

#2 conjugation: it’s important to learn so you can say the past, present, and future

#3 broaden your horizon: this goes with repetitive thinking and speaking.. you want to learn more words and things to add extra details in what you’re trying to say..so instead of “I’m hungry” try learning “i want to eat something “

And last

#4 music and shows: the more you watch the more you’ll recognize what they’re saying

These methods helped me learn allot with spanish so I’m pretty sure it can help with Japanese as well

Wow is this channel underrated. Been checking out a handful of your videos and they’re all great.

Taking a 3 week trip to a few cities in Japan during the fall. Hoping I at least develop an ear for, and can properly respond to people in Japanese. I’m all about respecting and learning about other cultures - wanna do my best to show that respect while I’m there.

I really like the style of video. It's very interesting!
As for the video's content, I agree. Discipline can certainly be the hardest and most important part of the language learning journey.

I'd go so far as to say this mindset could be used for almost anything you want to learn. Great video, subbed.
