No. As awesome as it may appear I don’t think you should do it. No matter what, the app isn’t going to be as smooth or optimized as the actual YouTube app. It just won’t. Plus then you have to worry about paying the devs, plus the $100 a year app development fee, plus the 30 percent cut from Apple, plus destroying your current fan base on YouTube, and having to constantly fix bugs and optimize it and no matter what the app would never get anywhere near as big as your tech channel on YouTube. Drew I’ve thought a lot about this as a developer myself and I really think this would backfire. There have been channels way bigger than you that have tried this and failed. I really understand why you want this and why it’s so exciting and everything but an App is a very bad idea.

I would love this. I have no problem with the YouTube layout and everything, but I very much dislike the Twitch app/site and would love this app and have everything together in one spot. Podcasts, live streams, videos, maybe some social media posts (?), etc.

Edit: would also be very willing to pay $5 a month to use the app w/o ads.

I think it this might hurt your channel. Hear me out, if people watch videos on the app, less people will watch on YouTube. If that happens, your videos will get less views and YouTube will recommend it less and you will get less new viewers. I doubt the app will get new viewers unless apple recommends it on the AppStore. I’m not saying I don’t like the idea, just that it might hurt your channel.

Maybe have a premium feature like YouTube has, where you pay month for things like listening to audio in the background and having colour theme choices

you can put trailers on your app along with an ad and then the community can watch trailers and watch full length videos on youtube.

I personally wouldn’t mind ads before the videos in your app as it will just be like a more optimised specified and nicer looking YouTube which I think would be cool

Subscriptions sounds like a great idea, overcast and bear are two of my favorite apps and they have both cheap subscriptions. It provides long term monetizing while also being low cost enough for people to not really mind, it won’t affect them. Overcast is also a good example of implementing adds and subscribing in order to remove them.

If it needs to be paid, then I think the monthly subscription would be the best option, especially to ensure you continuous revenue. More differentiation would be required than just ads between regular and “premium” membership.
