Planting Chestnut Trees

I grew some chestnut trees from seed. And now it is time to plant them. I am planting most of them in TreePro tree tube - tree shelters. They should protect the trees from the deer.

Hello Evan and Rebekah, thanks for another great video!

The taproot on those chestnuts are most likely rootbound and broken in pots that small. Need to start with a really deep pot like treepots (16" deep) and delay starting the seed as long as possible. You can only plant out after last frost and you want these in pots for not more than ~2 months.

Did I miss the space between the trees--the most important info?

I hope I live to see the day when American chestnut trees are able to thrive out in native forests again. What variety/strain are these? Are they the transgenics that there was talk of researching for blight resistance?

How are the chestnuts doing so far with your clay soil? What difference do you so between the trees planted in the tubes to those that were caged without tubes?

When planting stratified nuts in potting soil may want to add Worm Castings to the potting soil..

Are you going to mulch around the trees with some wood chips ? The trees would probably do better in a fungal dominated soil rather than a bacteria dominant soil, since you are trowing them in grass

Chestnut trees can get pretty big. Your planting seems a little close together. What height are you expecting them to grow to? Or is it a case that you'll be long gone before you have to worry about such a thing? :-)
