Would love to see an update of how those trees are doing.

Back in NJ, I worked in lawn care and planted a registered American Chestnut seedling for someone. They suggested that I throw the old cat box litter they had composted up in the back yard in the planting hole. It was their tree and their land, so I did it. The daughter raised cats for show and they used wood pellets for the cat box litter. The fecal matter was not in it, as they removed it before throwing the litter in the compost pile, which had kitchen scraps of all kinds in it. I`d say that within about 10 years, that tree was higher than their 2 story house and it almost completely dominated the front yard. The bole was probably was 10 inches in diameter at the 6` level. That was about 15 years ago.

we have received 10 trees, no GE - naturally blight resistant to a degree. I am planting now. Thanks for the inspiration

Great video, I appreciate it very much. We need more chestnut trees in the world. Such a remarkable tree. I would like a giant tree like this in my garden in South Africa.

I just received my shipment of 100 American Chestnut seeds. They are not cross bred so I am hoping the 100+ year old tree they came from is blight resistant.

What's to keep the rodents from going down inside the top of the flashing??

Well, it has been about six years. How are the saplings doing now?

I think you should have used galvanized mesh instead of the aluminum flashing. There's a fine mesh, about 1/8" available. This way water can migrate to the roots. The flashing becomes a barrier

I bed mine. Bed prep is remove the grass to bare soil. Turn the soil. Place nuts spaced on a 1' grid. Cover with leaves 4 to 6" thick. Cover that with chicken wire. Cover that with an old tubular livestock gate to hold everything in place.
The next spring watch for the sprouts to come up. Remove the gate and chicken wire while the sprouts are small enough to pass through the chicken wire grid without leaf damage. Hold seedlings in the bed until dormancy and then transfer them to where you want them.

Install an Owl nest box to help control rodents. There are Screech owls, Barn Owls and Northern Saw-whet Owl. Check to see what type of Owl nest box would be best for your habitat.

In Illinois Northern Saw-whet Owl will nest north of the 40 degree longitude line. They are the smallest and like forests. The Barn Owl is the largest and therefore the largest nest requirements. They like hunting in open range and eat more prairie voles than forest mice; they also like rabbit.

The Screech Owl falls in-between size wise and hunting prey. They have the advantage they stay in an area year round while the other Owl tend to nest, migrate for a few months and then return to nest.
