After clearing ground, Neal plants 5 chestnut trees at Dogwood Trace in the Ozarks - 3 Chinese and w Dunstan Chestnuts. These are deer magnets. They produce nuts each year consistently versus oaks and other mast trees.

Love the program. I live in panhandle of Idaho, above the Salmonriver, on Otto Creek. Love planting trees. Have some Chinkipin Oak seeds to plant this winter along with more Black Wallnuts. All for ifuture generations of families.

I would look into getting some nuts from Chestnut Ridge of Pike County and planting them this fall. You can protect them by using a tree tube over where you planted them or a coffee/tin can so that squirrels and mice don’t find them. Or keep them in potting soil in a ziplock bag in your refrigerator crisper until spring and plant them in pots or in the ground. You’ll get a lot more for your money.

How did the chestnut trees do this year? Will you be planting more? I’d recommend them being closer to provide better pollination. I made the mistake of planting some too far apart so the burs weren’t pollinated. I’d also recommend trying to clear some of those larger trees to get them as much sunlight as possible. The more the better. I harvested nuts from two of mine today that I grew from seed in 2015. I got about 40 burs and the squirrels got around a dozen.
