Planting Chestnut Seedlings | Dunstan Chestnut Orchard

Time to plant my Dunstan Chestnut Seedlings. From harvesting some Chestnuts dropped last September 28th to Cold Stratifying and then growing these seedlings, we’ve come full circle. I’m back in the orchard and planting 30 of our seedlings to fill holes in our orchard. Over the years, buck damage, drought and maybe even disease has caused us to lose a number of our trees. These seedlings from our own cultivars will help co,plate our orchard and provide nuts for us and the animals for years to come. Anew target buck, “Nixon”, is a beautiful 16 point buck and he will have my focus for the next few months. Our 82 Chestnut trees are approximately 8 years old and the chestnut crop is really turning out great again this year.

We are creating a habitat plan to improve the quality of food for our deer herd as well as Turkey and other critters. Habitat planning is critical early in the year to get the best results throughout the year, especially deer season. Our 180 acres in Central Georgia has much to offer, but we need more consistent and nutritious food options for our deer herd. Our full habitat plan includes prescribed burns and cutting of our timber forest, mulching of overgrowth areas, adding food plots and fruit trees.

My favorite hunting partner, my dad, enjoyed getting out to camp and enjoying some hard work, good laughs, family time, and occasionally getting a deer. When dad was no longer able to get in the woods with me, I started sharing brief videos with him. Now that dad has gone home to Heaven, I still enjoy taking the videos, but share them with YouTube and each of you. A lot of the time when speaking into the camera, I'm thinking of talking to dad! I hope you enjoy them!

Nice. We have 11 Dunstan Chestnut trees growing in Michigan 9 miles north of the Ohio line. Doing well, in the ground 5-6 years, starting to produce nuts.

Good job. I checked our orchard this morning. Unfortunately, we had a late frost that came when the chestnuts were flowering. No nuts for me to collect this year. Hopefully, we'll have a good crop next year.
