theres not a sinlge shred of evidence to support the competing theory, the only evidence we have is the early church tradition.

How is oral history and legend not evidence? It is data. One may disagree on its validity yet it is best not to dismiss out of hand. If many were indeed martyred, what evidence would Bart expect or demand? Obviously they didn't have video cameras back then.
