GUIDES YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS:

0:00 So, what’s the American Style?

At the core, it means that you eat the majority of your food with your dominant hand and your fork only. While you eat with your dominant hand, your other hand rests on your lap or underneath the table.

0:12 What does the American Style look like?

Basically, you hold the fork in your dominant hand, and you only move it to a non-dominant hand when you cut. So, let’s say, for a steak: your fork moves to the non-dominant hand, you cut, you put the knife down, you switch hands, and you eat the piece of meat. If you want to cut another piece, you repeat the procedure again.

If anyone's wondering, you need the other hand on your gun.

Can you please show me the correct etiquette of rubbing one out under the table?

I'm American, born/raised. I don't eat that way. I hold the fork in my left hand and the knife in my right hand at all times, because it's far more efficient.

What is the proper etiquette for shitting my pants while working?

I use my triangular bayonet attached to my musket to shovel food into my gullet, just like the founding fathers intended

I'm an American who grew up with the American style, but after finally recognizing how inefficient and tedious it is, I switched to the European style decades ago.

As a european I think it's weird to rest your hand on your lap under the table.

I'm American. My fork stays in my dominant hand. It makes NO sense to me to use the dominant hand to cut. It takes zero dexterity to cut the food.

And then you put your plate in the microwave because your meal's gone cold.

I think it’s silly to switch the hand the holds the fork every bite you take…

I have always just hold my fork with my dominant hand, and cut with the other hand… I think my left hand is better at cutting than my right (dominant) one at this point, as it should be

“Fork and knife” also gets me. Knife and fork.

Having it explained makes it look extremely awkward and begs the question, "Why do we eat like that?" I definitely do not eat like that anymore as I found the switching to be so, well, awkward. Non-dominant hand cuts the food unless I can cut it with the fork.

Is holding two things at once too complicated for yanks?

I do this and people always questioned me why I do this. SUPER GLAD I saw this video. Now I know! Thanks!

Most of the time, you hold a slice of pizza vertically in the air with your dominant hand and place your mouth directly underneath it. Then you lower your dominant hand until the pizza reaches your mouth.

Just a quick note. (I'm English so generally use a knife and fork UK style). In France if the hands are not visible during meals, it's the equivalent to elbows on the table. Hand in the lap, looks a bit iffy. Rest it lightly on the table.

That would be impolite in many levels in Europe.

Or you can just use your left hand to cut it which is what I do. You use your right hand for the fork and the left hand for your knife. My polish relatives would call me a "majkut" meaning left-handed but it was just the way I learned to eat. Why not just eat the way that is most comfortable for you instead of looking at what other people do, but then most people want to be just like everybody else.
