AC JOINT SEPARATION - Will The Bump Ever Go Away?

WEAR IT WITH HONOR

The bump seen after an AC separation is called a “stair step deformity” and is often the first dead giveaway for diagnosing an AC separation. The ligaments (Acromioclavicular and/or Coracoclavicular) that hold the far end of the clavicle down to the scapula are torn with AC separations grade 2 or above, and the result is the far end of the clavicle rides up creating a bump.

This bump is unfortunately permanent unless it is surgically repaired, but don’t let that scare you. Most people who have AC separations make full recoveries without surgery (Grades 1-3), they just have a new souvenir to show off!

I’ve has my injury since 2015 n I would suggest to anyone reading that recently got one please please please keep your shoulders as strong as possible. I haven’t been working out the past few years n this year I started experiencing alot of pain in my neck n even tension headaches on my left side (the injured side) since December. Don’t be like me n avoid the pain instead of trying to fix it after the fact 😭.

Does that strange "loose" feeling in the joint eventually go away? I'm 1 week out from the injury (grade 3) and when I roll the shoulder I can feel the separation, if that makes sense.

The shoulder looks worse after surgery unless it’s grade 3 then get surgery. I’m trynna compete in body building with only one ac joint… gotta hide the bump in my lats and shoulders. I’m trying to figure out how to pose evenly and make it look symmetrical with only one ac joint. If anyone is a bodybuilder competing missing an ac joint please help!

Folded my collar bone a few years ago it broke In 2 spots about an inch apart the one inch section was completely splintered into pieces and basically 90 degrees from where it should be it’s ugly but it is what it is a shoulder separation isn’t half as ugly tbh I’d rather that over all the nerve damage ect I have wish you guys a speedy recovery if your dealing with this rn

I've had an AC separation for almost 15 years now, and it most definitely hasn't gone away yet lol

I'm not worried about cosmetics, as long as it works right I'm happy.

It doesn't work right, but it works a LOT better than it used to, so I'll take it!

Hey I just wanted to know that ..I had a 3rd grade Ac joint dislocation before 1 year and I din’t opt for surgery .. yes bump is there and I don’t exercise as well 😢but I can perfectly move my shoulders but I can’t give pressure to the left one (injured shoulder )it hurts so bad that there’s tightness around my shoulder back ..and some muscle growth is there around my arms ..I was worried so I went to the doctor, and he said that we need to do the surgery ..but I don’t want to ..by seeing your videos it motivates me that even I can recover without doing surgery ..
I guess I need to start exercising now ..If u could suggest me some exercise videos please drop me a link thanks ..

Did you experience shoulder subluxation after the AC injury?
I'm having this on both arms

During recovery. Doing overhead press with light dumbbells will help.

I have this bump on my left shoulder, I fell directly on my shoulder 20 days ago. Mild pain is still here. Lifting the arm fully is a little bit tricky for me right now. How long does it take for the recovery ?

Idk if you’ll respond to this but I met with a PT yesterday and I was surprised to hear him say I should still be in a sling (I’m 10 days out from my accident, grade 3 separation). He says I need to remain in a sling for a couple months so the ligaments have time to heal. Being out of a sling separates the joint and so it won’t heal.

Pretty much everything else I’ve heard (including my orthopedic doctor) is that I should wean myself off the sling and resume day-to-day shoulder functions as pain permits. My understanding is those ligaments will NOT heal, hence the persistent bump, and the body compensates for lack thereof and learns to move the arm/shoulder via alternate muscles.. and stuff.

I’m seeing a different PT tomorrow for a second opinion.

Can you say if I have an AC joint injury? I was lifting some weights, so I was doing a dumbbell plank rotation, and suddenly I felt a stiff pull in my left shoulder. So I stopped exercising and checked my shoulder, and I noticed a bone bump exactly where my collarbone meets my shoulder. It has been two days, and the bone bump is still there. However, I have not experienced any pain at all and can move my shoulder perfectly. Please say what you think happened.
