Janis Joplin's former lover: 'She set me free'

To David Niehaus, Janis Joplin was his girl from Ipanema.

David Niehaus had no idea who Janis Joplin was when they met in 1970 on Ipanema beach in Brazil, where both had traveled for Rio Carnival. In this outtake clip from Janis Joplin: Little Girl Blue, Niehaus remembers his relationship with Janis as a liberating, wild but delicate one, in which he witnessed her most vulnerable and tender moments. Even though the couple split when her relationship with heroin and alcohol intensified, Niehaus still remembers Janis at her best -- the carefree girl who inspired him to be whoever he wanted to be.

One of a kind. That voice, that energy, that passion. We were blessed to have her.

Janis Joplin is one of my very few heroes. I love her as if I knew her.

He sent her a telegram inviting her to join him on a trip, traveling that is, and it arrived an hour late, so it was at the front desk waiting for her but she was in her room, and died. Tragedy. May these lovers be reunited in spirit.

Drugs killed her. She had a great voice.

Why didn't he go back to the States with her? From what I understand, she fell back into heroin when she came back to San Francisco. I also heard that he wanted her to take some time off and be with him, but she didn't want to.

It's a sad thing. We humans connect, but we do so much miscommunication, so much misunderstanding, so much...I hear what I want, but dimly am hearing what you want. So we miss a, LOT of opportunities, a lot of people and relationships with them we could have had. We miss commitment. Its true I believe that Joplin loved Niehouse and he loved her. But they didn't Hear the other person as much as they were listening to themselves.

It's so tragic, how brazen, worldly, and drug-addicted....so enslaved by Satan she was, and at such a young age. She was so caught up in the evils of the world, until it took her life, so young.
