I can fully imagine Mace just going to the Chancellor's office and rehearsing the entire confrontation in his head, imagining how he'll be the one to destroy the sith. Meanwhile the other three get bored and leave while he shadow-duells with Palpatine. Unfortunately, Anakin played along too.

We need a version of this where Palpatine isn't there, and Mace decides to practice for when Palpatine is there by swinging his lightsaber around while saying voice lines, but then Anakin is replaced with Palpatine, who has just come back from a beautiful performance of Squid Lake, and finds a madman destroying his apartment with a laser sword, and therefore it is only natural that he has to push Mace out the windu.
