The ninth in a series of fourteen films to star Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as the Twentieth Century's most iconic iteration of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, respectively.

A jewel is missing from a museum, and Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) tries to find the thief as bodies pile up across the city. Holmes is sure that the crime is the work of Giles Conover (Miles Mander), and the recent string of murders suggests that the criminal, having stashed the pearl alongside the belongings of an unsuspecting Londonite, has ordered a henchman to find it. With Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) at his side, Holmes finds himself in mortal danger as he closes in on his man.

This feature is presented in restored high definition with no advertisement breaks, as it deserves to be seen.

There's something about the intelligent level of these films that allow me to watch over and over and still enjoy them. Basil Rathbone the consummate Holmes.

Fantastic film! The boobytrapped book was my favorite part. I enjoy this version of Watson as well.

Impressive alarm system - I especially liked the way that the escape routes were re-opened once a weight had been placed on the pressure switch. No-one would ever think of bringing along a substitute object.

Giles smashes the glass and stalls the pearl, witnessed by the guard who yells 'stop thief' in the most bizarre way possible, and Lestrade says 'technically' he can't hold him? Bloody hell, crime was easy to get away with back then.
"it's no crime running when you're being chased" said Conniver. You were seen nicking the damn thing!

I think I figured out who dubbed the voices at the beginning (on the ship) and end of the film, since it's both obvious they were dubbed and uncredited as such. Ian Wolfe plays Mr. (Amos) Hodder, the antique shop owner (52:13) and two things clued me in. He almost goes into his caricature voice at 52:27 (similar to the "yes, yes" at 4:29 and 1:00:54) and the "bless my soul" at 53:42 and 4:24, which was almost a catchphrase. I'm willing to bet Ian Wolfe was those voices, changing his just slightly enough. He otherwise sounds very similar!

Does anyone remember how they used to always cut the first few minutes of movies on tv many years ago? I am seeing the beginning of so many old movies now for the first time on youtube.

Lestrade, "The Oxton orror". LMAO

Lestrade has to be the worst Scotland Yard detective ever but does make me laugh, poor little lady in shock at sight of a murder and he says "Ere You". Nigel Bruce great as Watson, Basil Rathbone is so lovely ❤️❤️

For some reason I'm always taken by the gesture of Lestrade grabbing Holmes arm. (touching Basil Rathbone) One spying through a keyhole could wonder what exactly he was doing: holding Holmes back, ready to push him away or hiding behind him? XD

They all seem to forget though without Holmes the pearl wouldn't even have been in the museum to be stolen in the first place.

Really Enjoyed this one!!! Do not usually go to a "Sherlock Holmes" with so many other choices and feel silly now that I did not since the few I have watched seemed to never leave me flat with a poor/rushed end. This kept sitting "on the edge" even after the watcher thinks they figured out what the would be like, but not this one!!!! Looking forward to the next one! Great Share!!! Thank you and Good Health, R C

Did anyone else notice that the villain, Giles Conover petted the cat as he was going up the steps? 58:55

Breaking the third lumbar vertebra would not kill you. Breaking the third cervical probably would, although people have survived compression fractures, as in a fall for example.

36:27 "straight from my heart... to his, I hope" hahaha brilliant little line. I googled and Johnson's Dictionary was a real thing.
