Deafness is often simplistically perceived as a single condition where a person is unable to hear. However, this monolithic view overlooks the vast spectrum of auditory conditions that fall under the umbrella of hearing loss, each with its unique characteristics and implications.

he three basic categories of hearing loss are sensorineural hearing loss, conductive hearing loss and mixed hearing loss.

Conductive hearing loss is typically the result of obstructions in the outer or middle ear — perhaps due to fluid, tumors, earwax or even ear formation. This obstruction prevents sound from getting to the inner ear. Conductive hearing loss can often be treated surgically or with medicine.

Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common type of hearing loss. It occurs when the inner ear nerves and hair cells are damaged — perhaps due to age, noise damage or something else. Sensorineural hearing loss impacts the pathways from your inner ear to your brain. Most times, sensorineural hearing loss cannot be corrected medically or surgically, but can be treated and helped with the use of hearing aids.

Most people don't know that TOTAL hearing loss is actually very rare. You'll often see deaf people listening to music because there is some amount of hearing left

My heart truly goes out to the deaf who have to deal with tinnitus… A while ago my eardrum ruptured which in turn weakened my immune system and led to a nasty ear infection before it was finished recovering which caused permanent damage to my left ear. Now I constantly hear a ringing/buzzing noise in the ear which I can best describe as screaming robotic crickets with my only solace being that I can still here at all, I struggle to even imagine how horrible it would be to deal with tinnitus on top of a more severe hearing loss.

As an audiologist, I approve this message lol. "Hearing loss" is such a huge category! It can be everything from muffled sound during an ear infection to complete deafness in someone whose cochlea never formed.

As someone who is slowly going deaf (it's a slow process of my nerves dying and so far, specialists have no clue why), I appreciate you bringing to light there is more than one way of being hard of hearing or deaf.

There’s also the deeper step of the brain’s auditory processing, which (if you’re like me) can get messy as well.

My favorite Deaf fun fact is that ‘hard of hearing’ to hearing people means they cannot hear well, but to Deaf people, the same phrase means they can actually hear fairly well. The phrase has more to do with using the communication strategy of the group than it does objective hearing loss

"Are you deaf?"
"Yeah"
"Cool! Which level?"

this is very similar for blindness too. And just a lot of conditions and handicaps in general tbh

This applies to all disabilities and sometimes combines in weird ways too. Glad to see you talking about it.

I was diagnosed with Otosclerosis like a month ago.

I guess I have had sub-par hearing my whole life but it was never bad enough to impact people's speech until recently.

Pretty funny to see it on this channel cause I had never heard of it at all before g own diagnosis.

Otosclerosis is unlikely to cause total deafness but often (as is my case) causes very bad tinnitus and sometimes pain.

The world of both deaf (medical) and Deaf (cultural) are really unique, I’ve been taking asl and it’s crazy how much is both different but also the same, it’s also cool to see things like communication in a different way, like how you can consider a deaf man and a hearing man not able to communicate not because of the deaf man not being able to hear, but because of the situation there in, with no accessibility that allows them to so easily communicate if they had what is such a simple thing

They should teach this in Deaf culture studies class! That’s interesting! 🙏

HEY the first kind of hearing "loss" you brought up is actually called microtia/atresia and I have that!! It's cool to hear about it outside of organizations all about it :)

As a med student who literally just had a class about this an hour ago, I can totally say that the way you explained it was amazing, I love the simple and direct way of teaching you have in all your videos...love it😊

My occupational therapist and I play a "game" when he has a new med student shadowing him. He lets them examine me, check things like range of motion, all the things they'd have to do if I was their patient and then get asked what my specific condition was: the answers range anything from a stroke to a degenerative muscle disorder when really I just a moderate form of a pretty common developmental disorder: cerebral palsy. In medical school they're usually only taught about the extreme forms of CP, so learning how to identify a moderate form of the condition is really important. I really enjoy helping people understand what it actually looks like outside of textbooks and maybe videos they have to watch of the extreme forms of it.

Awesome and informative short! Another little pivot from some of the other content I’ve seen from here too. You have a great way of animating and explaining things, so you could talk about the Bible, etymology, or pretty much anything and I’m sure I’d watch! 👍

That why I am thankful to finally be learning ASL and understanding that deafness is basically a spectrum too. And at times the brain is culprit at times too. God bless everyone dealing with any type of condition like this. That you’re not alone.

Heard it's the same way for blindness, where there's a whole spectrum of stuff when it comes to how much and in what ways people might see differently
