More on the Dark Souls Two-Handed Sword position

Following up on some points I made about the position the player character holds their sword in two hands in. Please refer to the earlier videos about my alternative preference for the Dark Souls 2 position as both a position to fence from and to idle in.

I never expected that Clark Kent liked swords

Is it just me, or does this guy kinda look like a nerdier superman who can kill you with a sword?

Something that I remember seeing from another sword expert is that the character in dark souls is not supposed to be a good swordsman in fact they are most definitely a novice swordsman completely out of their depth who wins despite the odds. So in a way I find the suboptimal sword holding to be in a way more correct for the character

DS2 had the best two-handed resting animation.

Excellent video robinswords. As always, it was informative, and entertaining. Can't wait to see more!

I think of it as something like a, in terms of firearms, "low ready" position. Its a position where your arms and legs arent doing much so you arent tiring them out, but its also a position that it would be easy to transfer into a proper guard position at a moments notice, and your weapon is still at the ready instead of sheathed. I think this makes sense for the type of thing we see where the character is exploring a dangerous place where he will need to fight but isnt constantly engaged.

Fromsoft games might not be the best to analyze for sword techniques, at least from the protagonist. Unless they're actively blocking or doing a specific weapon art, the quality of their guard is: there is no guard since that is an idle pose. Even their attacks are barebones.

Fromsoft non-NPC enemies would be a more interesting thing to look at since they are permitted to be more dynamic.

I think its also important to think about what john dark soul is doing, hes not fencing or fighting highly skilled warriors most of the time hes just killing barely conscious people and super large demons

You have reminded me, it *is* time to work out and practice with my sword to feel like Geralt or Aragorn

I mean he's just holding it comfortably 🤷 imagine walking miles constantly in a guard position

The benefit to the dark souls sword position is it allows you to roll.

Dark souls 2 had more realistic two hand grip I hear. Idk. I know nothing

You can also see it as an "i will not attack you if you don't get closer" type of stance

This position seems to be like the basic kendo posture, the Water kamai. It is a half-made move on purpose to allow for a fast guard, attack or feint without revealing exactly what you are prone to do. It could be a stab or a slash, in any direction. But it is not meant to greatswords, you can slice with a short step or thrust with a larger impromptu with a katana without the need of a huge lever movement of the arms

You could drop the blade from your shoulder into a fool's guard

Other than the Chosen Undead moving their arms for a big swing, they do also hold their sword out and at an angle when blocking. I think locking on also has them holding it more attentively. Not that it matters, rolling is much better

This is why greatswords and other big weapons feel better they rest on your shoulder

FromSoft: We like our games to be hard.
Clark Kent: YOU COULD AT LEAST MAKE THEM ACCURATE!
