Osmo VS GoPro

You might be surprised

DJI recently released its "GoPro killer" - the DJI Osmo Action. I've been using this camera for about a week now - so how does it stack up to the GoPro Hero7 Black? Both do 4k video and 12 megapixel stills. Both have incredible image stabilization (with a slight edge to the Osmo). But what about timelapse, hyperlapse and the other features action cameras are now expected to have? We'll take a look in this video.

I love front facing screen and Rocksteady Image Stabilization. I dont like the video lag in screen during Rocksteady Image Stabilization. DJI definitely needs to fix few things in firmware. But overall I am very happy with my purchase

Great review and comparison - what I find most interesting is how this action camera market is moving in attempt to take over the vlogging camera market - I think camera companies that aren't seeing this are going to have a rude shock when their point and shoot range stop selling

Great video! Couple things: the Osmo Action has a third way to switch screens, one of which is in "Voice Activated" by saying "switch screens". If you do it while filming, there is a four second lapse in the video and I think it starts a new vid. Deal in post as with all the longer GoPro videos you create. Another is that the Osmo's lens, the first time you take it off, is nowhere near as simple as you make it seem. I got it off by hand, but I'm strong; many people will need a tool or a jar opener style rubber grabber or something. It's insanely tight! ... plus, it also gives you the availability of a bunch of AFFORDABLE non-GoPro OEM mounting systems and peripherals that use the GoPro mounting setup; a HUGE plus in my book, and kudos to DJI for not making that proprietary! It'll save a lot of people a LOT of money.

One other thing... "Slightly better" stabilization??? Have you seen iPhoneDo's review on this (he actually did two; one as a followup to address questions as to whether or not the camera placement on his first video comparing a Sony action cam, the GoPro Hero7 Black and the osmo Action in a crazy wiggle-test made a difference... it didn't!)? There's NO question as to who the King of Stabilization is here! It's the Osmo Action. Thumbs up on this vid!

I CHOOSE. .... DJI OSMO.

WHY? BECAUSE IT HAS A SLOWMOTION RECORDING. AND YOU CAN TALK A VOICECALL LIKE WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING JUST SET UP VOICECALL THEN TALK TO YOUR CAMERA. THEN AUTOMATICALLY RECORDED WHAT COMMAND YOU WANT TO DO IT. AND ALSO IT HAS A WATERPROOF WITH OUT CASING

Great comparison. But for my use case the Osmo has an edge over the GoPro for timelapses. I shoot RAW and the minimal interval on the GoPro is 5s in RAW mode, where on the Osmo its only 2s. On the other hand for Video Protune has more dynamic range than D-Cinelike on the Osmo, and I really need HDMI out. So I prefer the Hero 7, for now at least.

I have both the Osmo Action and the GoPro Hero 7 Black.

The image quality and stabilization of the Osmo Action are much better than the GoPro Hero 7 Black.

The battery lasts longer on the Osmo, it also has a HDR video mode which is very useful in some shooting conditions.
Bear in mind the GoPro Hero 7 Black technology is older than the Osmo, so it is understandable why the Osmo is better.

One thing a lot of ppl are skipping over: The GoPro software and ecosystem is phenomenal. The transfer speeds from camera to phone are amazing and rock solid, the GoPro Plus app and subscription are amazing, and the integration with Quik is super cool. These are the real difference makers in my opinion. I use the HERO7 for business but more often I use it for family/travel. It’s the easiest system to shoot high quality content then edit and share on the go.

You can say command words to the osmo also. Switch camera, start recording, stop recording and power off

Watching on 4K monitor, it looks like the Osmo is quite a bit more sharp for the shots around 7:50. Was that shadow dark enough to push up ISO and the OSMO is handling it better?

Please please please review the audio quality. It is just as important to me as video and still quality. Thank you.

I’m a video newbie, so I’ve found I can merge Osmo Action video with other DJI products ( Phantom 4 pro, Mavic, Osmo Pocket) easier than I could with GoPro. Loved my Hero 7 Black, I think it’s picture is most pleasing straight out of the camera, but sold it to stay all in the family.

I guess DJI could take a lot of the software from their drones and adapt it for the Osmo; like stabilization, power management.

Ted to me you missed the biggest benefit the DJI Has over the GoPro and that is the DJI uses a standard mic jack, no $50 dongle required! Also, that <redacted redacted redacted> dongle, if not seated 100% correctly will not record audio with an external mic. I have lost six videos because there was no audio. I was going to go with the Sony cam for my next purchase, but now I think I'm going to go with DJI.

I’ve been loving the Hero 7, but I’ve always preferred DJI products in general. I haven’t used the Osmo Action, but they seem to be on a good path. I think the second generation will really step up some of the durability, which I’m excited about.

Thanks for the compaisison. I have the feeling the Osmo is not as good as the gopro in video quality. I feel there are more "compression" artifacts on the Osmo. What do you think ?

Great camera comparison. Kudos for your comfort in front of the camera. Your presentation is one of the best I've seen here within YouTube.

Sounds like I'm gonna get the Hero 7 Black after all. Thanks for the video!

No external ports on the Osmo is not acceptable IMO. I always use mine on the GoPro to hook up external batteries to run extended timelapses or nightlapses. Your max record time will be very limited on the Osmo compared to the GoPro.

There are only three brands of action cameras for me now: DJI, GoPro and Sony. They are far ahead everyone else.
