I always thought of Hunter Hunter as 1000 years after Yu Yu Hakusho. Everyone has nen because of all the psychics that had children. Much like Yusuke, their bloodlines contained powers. These Powers/Territories eventually developed into Nen.

I don’t know if Reincarnation is a thing i. These shows, but it would explain the extreme parallels to our 8 protagonists. Hell, maybe the Hunter Hunter cast are descendents of the Yu Yu Hakusho group. As for the Dark Continent, maybe that’s Demon World. Now that the Barrier is gone, it might just be known as the “Dark, ” part of the planet.

Idk, I’m just spit balling here as I wait for my food to cool off. I’m sure you guys can make a great video going into this topic and doing it justice, if you wanted to.

One really cool thing to take into account is that the Hunter x Hunter system is a direct evolution of the concepts of using spiritual energy and can be easily adapted in both universes, such as spiritual manipulation transforming into aura manipulation from there. From the moment, characters enter that world their categories can be judged based on their abilities, for example:
Yusuke: Emmiter
Kuwabara: Materializer
Kurama: Manipulator
Hiei: Transmuter
