Note: you do not want to eliminate back pressure. If your desire is to get rid of the cackle back through the pipes then I would suggest a quieter muffler be used in the system or simply try the addition of resonators at or near the tails. With the cast iron heads and the moderate 8.75:1 compression you shouldn’t have any timing woes and I see you temperature remains constant. My suggestion for initial timing would be 4 degrees of initial.

just wanted to say thought this is not only a quick response to a question but also one with good questions. very nice SUMMIT.

Many factory dual exhaust systems were not crossed over (no H-pipe, no X-pipe). Some factory dual systems employed the use of various crossflow mufflers; even here the name was deceptive as very few ever shared a common space or venting area with the other bank. The few crossflow mufflers that did share bank to bank were doing it so far down the exhaust system that the benefits were minimized.

Originally, most aftermarket systems did not cross over. It wasn’t until recently, say the past five or ten years that most aftermarket dual systems started to offer some form of bank to bank crossover.

Okay, let me see if I can nail this down for you. It appears that you have a 1994 Chevy truck/SUV 350. If I remember correctly, this motor was TBI from the factory with about 8.75:1 compression and a factory initial timing of zero (0) degrees when fuel injected. The exhaust issue has developed because of the reduced (not eliminated) back pressure and the changes you’ve made to the exhaust system with headers, pipes and mufflers - sound level attenuation.

•Okay, so are there any back pressure issues? You mentioned a back pressure issue; was there an issue with too much or too little back pressure and how did you know?
•What kind of diagnostics have you run in the past and what were the results?
•What is the existing tune; operating temperature idle speed and initial and total timing?

No problem, Steven! We would be happy to help. What issue would you like us to address?

You can however run the 8 degrees you are currently using as long as you are not running on or getting the rattles when heavily loaded. Let me know how this works out – good luck.

Nice to see the inside of that pipe. I didnt know there would be a smaller hole in that H pipe. Interesting...

Hi Stephen, Is your 64’ Chevy a straight six with an aftermarket dual system; or is it an eight cylinder with a converted factory single exhaust or factory dual exhaust? Are you still running the factory cast iron manifold(s) or are you using headers? You mentioned a back pressure issue; was there an issue with too much or too little back pressure and how did you know? Are you running the 283 and is it stock? What kind of diagnostics have you run in the past and what were the results?

I think the same as long as the single pipe diameter matches the sum of the other two so the flow wouldn't choke.

I think they didn't intend to make those holes at all, but they had to: with no holes it would break very fast due to the temperature difference and pressure, probably would corrode too.
What is truly interesting is that those holes and the chamber act as an obstruction to the flow.

Personally I like a little pop pop pop sound.

Thanks I had no idea that this stored noise comes from the H-pipe for me its sounds better to be honest on the vettes

I assume it was 2 much back pressure because when slowing down it sounded like
those guys with 1in pipes that crackle just not nearly as bad.
my diagnostic skills are my ears and a wood dowel lol.
No tune, small block pulled from a junkyard. runs at 190F no matter what.
idle is at 500rpm, timing is set at 8 degrees. i have no idea what it should be set at.

I ask because my 1964 chevy truck its got dual exhaust that are completely separate i have had back pressure problems before.

what setup would you reccomend for a corvette c6 ls2 or ls3 from headers intake, exhaust pipes and so on and what gives that pop sound on a automatic transmission ?
