Ask Alabama: Why do executions take so long?

A reader asked us why it takes so long for an execution to take place after a person has been sentenced to death.

for me that answers why it can't be done within a few weeks or months or maybe even a year but i still have a hard time understanding why it has to take 10, 20 or even 30 years to get all this done

It's all of the appeals. First the state, then the federal. It's cheaper to give them life in prison but some don't need to take another breath.

In Canada we don’t have the Death Penalty we don’t have Life Without Parole. The Max sentence is life without parole for 25 years and that is for Treason against the crown, 1st degree murder and some terrorism charges. And soon we may not have solitary confinement because there is a pending Supreme Court of Canada ruling over the constitutionality of solitary confinement. What the most likely outcome of the ruling is very strict rules for solitary but not have it completely abolished. Ie: no longer than 14 days and remove the inmate from solitary if they become suicidal and place them in a medical unit which was the ruling in 2 provincial supreme courts. We may see complete abolition of it or it might be kept as it is. The Supreme Court of Canada bench is a little to the left of centre so the strict regulations of it will probably be the most likely outcome of the ruling

For me execution its not a good thing even know people did bad things its not okay to execute just let them live till they die then they will go to hell

Innocent people sentenced to death had no idea it was that High
Edit: I think this just shows that the system and juries do not know what innocent till proven guilty is OR! BEYOND a reasonable doubt

I understand but wanting to put someone innocent in jail or death that’s when a judge should put on a hold a conviction untill it can be proven (many have said better to let 10 guilty men go free than put one innocent man in jail)
Further if I was put on death row Innocent and it was gonna take longer than I personally could Handle I’d rather die I mean we’re talking 5 years to a decade in isolation among more restrictions than general population
I’m a hermit and could handle way less than anyone else

They should be outlawed almost all together. Then a law passed if an execution takes place the one that renders the verdict has to to the execution.
