To Protect Yourself, Never Give Your DNA Or Biometric Data

So many companies now are requesting people's biometric data. Things like fingerprints, iris scans, voice scans, DNA, etc. are not pieces of information that you should freely give to a company. These are immutable identifiers and could potentially be a security risk and privacy nightmare.

I am a genetist, and one of the problems of sharing your DNA is that you inform about the probability or risk of developing certain diseases . That information, in hands of your employer, can be used to fire you or select other people over your, even though you might never develop a disease, but having a higher risk than your collegues is something companies don´t want.

it's hard to talk about this stuff without people calling you a tinfoil hat theorist, even though it's reality.

I never thought about this before, but now that you mention it, it is really spooky.

Thank you for spreading common sense, I'm glad that no one in my family has done any of these very suspicious DNA ancestry tests. Thumbs up!

There is actually even worse. Some companies implement electronic chips under their employee's skin (officially for their security), who are happy with it. But who knows what data (besides geolocation) is sent to whoever is willing to collect it. It kinda makes me sick that this might become the norm in a not too far future

One more important point, is that biometrics is not protected by the 4th Amendment in the United States, while a strong pincode/passphrase is. This means if you're using TouchID, FaceID, FaceLock on your mobile device to "secure" your data, you cannot refuse a law enforcement order to unlock your device so they can look through it, clone it and add/remove/install software on it.

If you use a pincode/passphrase, you cannot be compelled to reveal it, without a legal court order. There's already precedent out there where law enforcement has walked into a house or an office and asked everyone to unlock their phones so they could be copied and cloned. Refusal, now makes it possible for them put you under "arrest you for resisting arrest.".

Never ever use biometrics to "secure" your device. You're actually doing the opposite. A biometric token should only EVER be a username, never a password.

My child had grades lowered for refusing to give biometric data as part of multiple assignment requirements. No one is protecting our kids and college students who trust these teachers and don’t see the connection between seemingly benign assignments like, “write an essay using these five specific prompts about your family: ethnicity, religion, health issues, political beliefs and socio-economic status.” And instead of writing it- record it as a video. Now they have your voice, your image, and your family history and no one is there to explain the dangers of this.

They just collect your facial features without even asking.

People don't think, period. Only concerned with short term gratification and convenience.

Literally, besides hackers, no one cares for privacy bcz they're not aware.

Flying home to NZ from Japan, at the stop over in China we had to have our eyes and fingers scanned to pass through.

Also with just a bit of your DNA data, they can know what illnesses you're prone to and possible diseases you have. This information can be really useful for health insurance companies to discriminate against you.

Unless you’re Indian, in which case it’s impossible to avoid

Thank you very much! I'm never adding my fingerprint to my phone ever again.

Every time I disable the biometric thing on my (cough) ...Windows laptop... my laptop screen completely fucks up, like the glitchy beginning of a fake Anonymous commercial. It doesn't go back to normal until I enable it again :(

People these days don't even think about their privacy. They want the freebies, and don't think about what they are giving away.
