I recommend the book, "Thunder at Harper's Ferry" by Allan Keller which discusses Gerrit Smith who supported John Brown.

It’s easy to cast judgment on past actions, but we need to consider the level of ambivalence that good Christian people felt over a situation that was about to tear America apart at that time. Can we ever justify violence and rebellion for a greater cause, and what do we say to those of the BLM movement today? These issues never have a pat answer and only adds to the ambiguity to the situation where human rights are concerned.
